What are you talking about? Even at ISO 3200 the files are perfectly usable if the photographer exposes properly.

Expose to the right. Almost half the data is in the highlight region of the histogram, so you can get very clean files if you overexpose a bit and pull back in post. If you underexpose and push it's gonna be messy. Just be careful not to blow highlights, especially that pesky red channel.

Perry, have a look at your images. First one is fine, but the second one is noisy. From my experience, 5D is great to ISO 1600. I used to use ISO 3200 only if I had to, and I was rarely satisfied.

The second one has noise but it's also a heavy crop so it's always gonna be amplified. But I'm out of the loop and some noise doesn't really bother me because I think we crossed the point a long time ago where image quality/noise is a major concern - everything is great.

What are folks looking for nowadays anyways? Is the goal to have zero noise at all ISOs to satisfy the pixel peeping urge? My benchmark has always been making 8x10/12" prints, which I guess not many do anymore but I still think prints from the 5D look fine at 3200. In fact even my Micro Four Thirds cameras, which are way noisier than the 5D, print great at ISO 3200. That said, when there's shadow noise on a 5D file at 3200, the colour noise is admittedly pretty ugly. But I think the main problem is the overall colour and tonal degradation at 3200 rather than noise.

Sadly I rarely touch my 5D anymore and sold almost all of my Canon lenses -?. I'm mostly shooting film on my Leicas and developing at home...so a bit of grain is a fact of life to be embraced rather than shunned.
