I am considering 5D for my first full-frame. But I've been hesitant because of dust problems on the sensor.
Should I save up for 5D II instead? Prices on 5D seem too good to pass up.

Depends on your needs. If you're going to "save up" I would just bypass the 5D2 and go to the 6D for nearly the same price, or 1Ds III if you want a tank build. The 5D2 will give you a lot more resolution, and video capability, and higher ISO capability, but unless you specifically need to shoot ISO 6400~12800 and unless you need the extra resolution, or if you're someone who will use video, then again, I would question the nearly three times the cost. Personally I had the funds to go with any camera I wanted, I chose to get a 2nd 5Dc, so I have two 5Dc's. I could have gotten a 6D or something, but I frankly just like the files and look of the 5Dc and I really don't need the extra resolution, ISO, nor video, etc at all. I don't even need Live View. But that's my personal preference.

Full frame options (Canon):

1Ds (11MP) - $350ish
5Dc (13MP) - $350ish
1Ds II (17MP) - $550ish
5d2 (22MP) - $800ish
6D (20MP) - $950ish
1Ds III (21MP) - $1200ish

The bolded items are what I would consider "best for cost" right now. The 5D classic is simply difficult to beat for cost, because for $350, you get a very good camera minus all the bells & whistles. But you don't just get it because it's full frame, you get it for the "look." Realistically full frame from even a few years ago doesn't matter much. But again, it's about the look. Full frame to me has a lot more to do with how the interaction is with focal lengths so that you can use specific glass for specific things. The 5Dc is a great way to get a feel for shooting 35mm film, in the digital age. You can print big images from these 13MP files. I have a 16x20 on my wall right now from a 5Dc and it looks plenty sharp and detailed. I could have printed larger. So I just never felt the need to get a higher resolution at this time.

The 1Ds II is often forgotten when folk talk about budgets and full frame. It's old, and it's menu & LCD are antiquated, but, it's still a high resolution full frame sensor, with the old 1D look (awesome colors & tones), and built like a tank. Inexpensive really for what it is in terms of image quality (but you have to be ok with that old control system & rotten old LCD). Bonus points are that you get a tank build and you get a really great AF system so it can be used for a lot of things and not slouch at anything. The big down points are the LCD being near useless other than to see a histogram, and a very clunky menu system. Lastly, batteries are annoying compared to lithium. Still, great camera system for cheap for the kind of files it can produce.

6D is just the best all around budget full frame frankly from Canon for cost. I would get it for nearly any application over 5D2. I think the only reason I'd go 5D2 over 6D would be if I were a wedding shooter and needed the dual cards, or needed to have matching cameras, etc. Otherwise, 6D is nearly the same cost, better IQ (by a hair), better ISO (by a hair), better AF system (note: the 5D2 has the same AF system as teh 5Dc).

Overall I'd love to have a 1Ds III for landscape, etc, but I sold two of my 1D's already, because I just realized as much as I like them, they're just so heavy. And when I'm hiking, I actually want less weight.

So, I use a duo of 5Dc's and I have zero regrets. Heck, my next full frame is either a 6D or A7S strictly for ISO. Probably an A7S. But I still use my 5Dc's for everything except wildlife.

Thank you for your detailed reply. For my needs, I think the 5Dc would be fine. I don't shoot much video and my pics will be mostly scenery and people with 50mm lens. It's the "look" of full frame that I find appealing. I may eventually work up to a 6D instead of a 5D2 based on your recommendation. But it's just the dust problem that has me worried. It seems like a big annoyance for a lot of 5Dc owners, based on what I've read on this and other forums.

Sensors can be cleaned.

I just use a rokkit blower with mirror locked up on my 5D's.

I can clean up a spec or two of dust in post.

I wouldn't worry too much.

If a camera that is 8 years old that hasn't had it's mirror fix done (and hasn't had the issue either), has 1 or 2 specs of dust on the sensor (which can be cleaned), that is very inexpensive is a worry and is still a sought after camera today isn't statement enough. The 5Dc, despite it's age, is a professional tool and is very well made. If you want one, get one, you can always sell it if you don't completely enjoy it. There's always someone looking for one.

I got hired to do a wedding in September with a couple that lives in my neighborhood. These guys are badass - both are hardcore car kids. So anyways we did their engagement session Saturday afternoon and she wanted to incorporate her M3 into lots of the shots. Here's a few teasers from their session. 5D + 135L and 24-105L
