Trying to decide between a used 100-400mm or a Tamron 150-600mm. It is hard. :( I think I would like the extra reach of the Tamron, especially on this camera, but it's kinda big and heavy and maybe not as fast focusing as the Canon. ?_?

This looks wild and out there, but it is right by the parking lot. Shhhh.

It's personal.

I went through it, and I decided 400mm was too much of a limit when I was looking for reach, especially on full frame. I used a 400mm FOV for a long time and found I was constantly craving more. I picked up a Tamron 150-600 and it's sharp wide open at F6.3 at 600mm and it has stabilization that is very good. Great lens for the money if you want inexpensive reach that is good. If I had to choose between a 100-400 and a 150-600, I opt for the longer lens. It's not that heavy, it's quite compact and light weight despite how long the focal length is compared to some big fast white lenses. I use a 300 F4L IS as the compliment to my 150-600 so that I have faster snappier glass if I feel the need. But honestly the Tamron 150-600 focuses fast enough to track birds in flight, so I'm not concerned with having it faster. It's plenty fast, and dead silent.

But only you can figure out if you want the limit of 400mm or 600mm.

+++++++++++++++

5Dc + Tamron 150-600, check the shutter speeds at these focal lengths, that image stabilization works great in low light:

Here I am panning with a duck, and you can see the twigs in the corners blur, but the subject is sharp.

All wide open at F6.3 on the 5D.

Woah, 1/50, that's crazy impressive! Ok, I will do a bit of deal-searching and see if I have the patience until Black Friday. :-)

Granted, I have a lot of practice with bracing and breathing and shooting a long lens. But the image stabilization helps a lot. The 4 stops is really 4 stops. At F6.3 (1/3rd stop slower than F5.6), it's really just 1 & 1/3rd stop difference to F4. Yet a 600mm F4 would cost $9,000 and the real difference in the situation would have been that I could have shot at 1/100s in the same situation and light. Image stabilization saved me $8300 basically. Granted, in this example, that context makes sense. A 600 F4L obviously will do quite differently in other situations. But in hand held low light, I use a light long lens with modern image stabilization.

If you're on a tripod/gimbal, you're even better off as a stable platform makes a big difference too.

Depends on what you're wanting to shoot.

Lovely mountain shot by the way!

Very best,

Will they let you try it on your camera before you buy it?

The Captain and crew finally got their stuff together, now if we can only remember where we left it. :cool:
