Can anyone give me some insight on what I’m experiencing. My 5d seems to struggle with focus from a distance and I’m not sure if this is normal and within spec or not. I’ve shot with a classic for many years but never portraits which has been a bit of a challenge so far. I can shoot close to my subject and get excellent sharpness, but once I shoot something full body it seems to drastically fall off. Can anyone confirm if this is a technique issue or camera issue?

Both shots below at 100%, very similar set ups and same lens. Facial shot is very sharp, full body not so much. Both focused using the center point on her right eye.

I think it's the lens.

The 5D Classic is one camera that I refuse to let go. I have turned around a lot of camera bodies but love the goodness that the 5D classic continues to deliver. Thanks for posting everyone the images are excellent!

I’m using a 100/2, not the macro. Basically the same as the 85/1.8.

It’s also confirming focus quite quickly, but the result is less than desirable.

Have you tried to manual focus at the same range? I'm still thinking it's a lens issue.

I’ll give it a shot, not sure how accurate I’ll be on the standard focus screen. I have also noticed this with more than 1 lens.

I'm going off of another lens. Specifically the 50f1.4, the barrel "stretched" which would no longer allow focus at certain points ,**even in manual focus.** I found a website that showed how to take it apart and repair it. Not saying at all that the 100mm has the same issues, but testing on a different body, or try to manual focus may help diagnose the issue.

The last ring bottom right on this photo has to slots in the barrel. They stretched out so the motor could no longer focus the lens.
