Some advances are subject to Moore's Law, and some aren't. Mechanical precision, such as it takes to create a 100% viewfinder and two-score focus points on that screen, is not subject to Moore's Law. Greater mechanical precision costs more money every time.

Moore's Law isn't a law which anything is subject to. It is simply an observation in the pace of semi-conductor manufacturing.

Also, approximately 100% VF is not 100% VF. The only people who know what the tolerance is for "approximately" work for Canon. For all we know, that could be marketing buzz to say the VF is exactly the same but sound like an improvement.

D700 went from 95% to 100% all while maintaining the same price - and while tripling its resolution, adding movie features, and a slew of other things...

Either Nikon is plain better at designing, engineering and manufacturing cameras or Canon is trolling us all...

d800 lost 50% of the d700 FPS and it still has similar AF in the fact that the crosstype sensors are all bundled in the middle 20% (sucks for off center low contrast composing) :p

Doesnt it do 6 in crop mode? And tell all the D700 owners how bad they have it AF wise...
And are we really arguing the merits of this price hike? Really? Really?

I think it's valid points.

If every nikon penile salivator is going to go on and on with stupid made up figures, we might as well return with the 5D3 being 50% faster FPS, more AF points, with a wider spread, "pro", not just (semi-pro;-)a) AF system. Blah blah blah...

I wouldn't touch a D800 with a ten foot pole, no thanks. 36MP of mush, stupid large files and a completely pedestrian AF system. No Thanks!

yeah, I will say I would have much rather had the 5Diii be $2700, I won't lie there. The hard part for me is the 5Diii purchase is pushing some other lens upgrades/additions further away. 17-40 -> 16-35II and or a 17mm TS-E for example... Although, if the ISOs are enough better at 6400 and 12800, I might swap my 24L for a 16-35II then get a 28mm 1.8....

I agree that the price hike sucks, but like everyone has been saying, it WILL normalize over time. If no one buys it, then it will go down in price. simple.

However, most people will suck it up and buy it anyway, myself included. I justify the purchase by a few factors.
-looking what competition offers (d800 - dont need DR, MP, and it's a little slow)
-looking at what advantages I CARE about that it has over current cam -5d2- (
greatly improved AF with -2EV sensitivity and wider array,
less intrusive noise[Banding],
slightly higher iso perf [TBD],
50% faster fps,
MUCH less shutter lag/blackout time,
CF AND SD card [great for my eyefi],
3:2 HIGH res screen [Iluv2chimp],
7 frame AEB with 3EV increments [luvmesomeHDR],
good implementation of Auto ISO [finally], etc etc.)

And those are only the features I care about and it has many other goodies too. is that worth 1000+ extra? hell yea it does for me. would i prefer it be $500 less? hell yea, but do I want to wait? hell no.

^ yeah, change around some of my reasons, but I do this for a living and I know I'll own a 5Diii eventually. I don't see the price coming down much over time, so I'd rather have it now and use/abuse it for 3~4 years than wait then wish I'd bought in earlier. Funny thing is I was thinking it wad 7D&5Dii -vs- 5Diii, but I re-ran my budget and I can juuuuust squeeze in the 7D & 5Diii I think, so that's the route I'm going. I need a backup for weddings and I think I'll go 7D since it's got better FPS and also added range for some other projects.
