I kinda read the comments as "Occupy Canon".

Would make for an interesting group of people, all brandishing various levels of cameras, with banners most likely taken with Canon equipment and printed with Canon printers. :)

Quite an erroneous read IMO, because the actual type who you would expect to 'occupy canon' would be those without a job in photography, with cameras purchased for hobby use - or by their parents, who've never sold a photograph in their lives... who incidentally probably have no problem with paying Canons asking price. They probably also have more L glass than professional photogs too... :)

I like the comments like "if you dont like it, sell your gear and go to nikon"
When I started photography somebody told me.. "glass before camera". i didnt understood back then, i thought the camera was the one making the pictures

The glass is like a car, and the body is like spare parts?? Once you paid 20K for a car you will pay 3.5k for spare parts, otherway you will lose a lot of your investment

Switching from Canon to Nikon is expensive because you re gonna lose 20-40% of how much you invested in glass

And one more thing.. The ones who said glass before the camera, are the people who works in marketing for Canon / Nikon :)

I don't remember reading much about ISO noise, Megapixels, or image quality in general.

Probably because not all people try to make use of all the dynamic range the sensor has.

And the camera was champ in several categories, so the people who do need lots of DR did not have much to gain from making more threads about it. They either suffered photos not possible to take, spent extra time and effort on workarounds, or lived with the artifacts.

Threads about banding are now running a second turn through the system for the simple reason that the 5D2 (or 5D3) are no longer MP champs or IQ champs. So it's reasonable to start wonderinga about exactly what the 5D3 will manage. This time around, people will feel a definite urge to get their hands on some competing gear but with the cost of switching being the big cooling-down factor.

If you have a race car that is able to manage top-three in race-after-race you compete in, you don't spend too much time arguing if it is eating brakes.

When you do get in a situation where you are no longer really competitive for positions, it's time to go back to that question of the brakes again to at least try to maximize what you have. Even if that will not be enough to get back to the top of the podium.

People were just bugged about inferior autofocus with the classic and mark 2.

But autofocus issues is more an issue where there already existed clear alternatives. If AF was #1 and IQ only #2, then it was obvious to switch to a different camera.

But with IQ #1, there was no obvious alternative to the 5D2 but without the pattern noise. So no really meaningful to cry about spilled milk.

but here's the kicker, canon didn't drop the 5Dii price much over time. Started at $2700 and came down $500 to $2200 only recently? Yes, there were rebates, but those last a month and don't really count for me when talking about MSRP. But canon has already announced a MAP enforcement coming in May. If they do that it might be to keep anyone from discounting the price at all.... I'd bet we won't see the 5Diii for less than $3000 for a solid 3 years unless you go used or refurbished...

basic economics, prices only drop when there is supply to meet demand. the 60D price dropped from $1100 down to $900 in just two months after the release because no one is buying it. the 5D3 price will tumble if the demand isn't there.

As for pre-orders, someone posted that BHPV said the 5diii was at 12,500 and the d800 was at 4500.
That was a few days ago.

interesting stats...

every single camera in the x0D line has seen a similar price drop. The 5Dc had a price drop, but mostly because it was the first consumer FF camera and was priced at $3200 back in the day when that was more like $4000~$4500 now. It HAD to come down, it was just crazy canon actually made a FF sensor for mortals. The 5Dii caught up to demand in the last year, maybe more. Still very little price drop. The 5Diii will have crazy demand, even if it's only from video guys and wedding/PJ shooters. The only thing they've missed on IMHO is possibly MP, but as the stat above shows, far more people are flocking to the 5Diii than the D800. That should tell you something. Canon improved the DR and ISOs and banding from what we've seen, the only question is "how much?" really.

I shoot landscape and arch a lot. I've enjoyed the 21mp of my 5Dii, and I'm NOT wishing for more. The 5Diii gives me what I want, I wouldn't be surprised if other landscape guys felt the same. I know a few well know landscapers (that don't bother with forums) that had pre-ordered 1Dxs for their landscape work, they're not second guessing that for a pair of 5Diiis, but they're NOT wishing for a nikon and or more MP....

It's interesting to see who's complaining about the 5Diii and why though. :)

Notice how I wrote "might lack". ;)

But I have done tests myself and looked at results from others.

5D3 raw ISO improvement over the 5D2 is about 0,5 stop or less. It should be 2 stops i.m.o.

Does this mean that D800 has 2 stop improvement in RAW over D700 as well? Or "should"?

Sorry but I don't see a HUGEEEEEEE difference. But I can tell you one was processed properly using a RAW image and the other is SOOC JPEG.

I think they're pretty comparable (as these things can be, considering different lighting, photographer, lens, etc..)

That said, it's pretty impressive that the D800 holds up against the 5D3 with that many more pixels.

The only conclusion I can draw from those is that I would be very happy with either camera, they both perform very well. I certainly wouldn't be worrying about which one is "best".

Hard to compare them directly anyway, different situations, photographers, settings (not the same ISO for example, although both are low enough that noise shouldn't be an issue anyway).

The noise in the background of the D800 @ iso640 does not look all that good though. Just making an observation, not condemning the D800.

Oops.. my mistake...

Photography is about GEAR and not talent or practice. Practice won't make you a better photographer. Expensive equipment will. =D
