I currrently have a Q3 T Markins head on my traveler tripod and we were going to buy 2 of the Gitzo mononpods below in the link with one more traveler head for the wife and I. So we could save a bit and just utilise what we have.

http://www.gitzo.us …pod-5-section-with-g-lock (external link)

Now I have just had a look on the RRS site and for an extra $100 we can get the package in the link below, seems less bulky and well made, should also be an easier head to work on a monopod.

What are peoples thoughts and does the RRS &/or Gitzo monopod come with a decent bag that will fit the head, attached, or just the dust cover bag??

Cheers

Actually further to this thread, does anyone know where to get monopod bags from that will fit these or at least the RRS set up with head on. Not a big bag though, just one that fits.

What brand of plates do you use?

IIRC RRS heads don't play as well with other branded plates due to tighter tolerances. That said I've never had any qualms tossing my tripod with my N/300 2.8 and TC over my shoulder using my M20.

I use RRS plates, but the Markins lever release is adjustable.

When I had a monopod I had a Gitzo with the RRS monopod head and I highly recommend that setup or similar. I wrote a review of the combo I had here: LINK

I say pick up the RRS monopod head instead of another Q3T and then whatever monopod you like.

Great review cheers, I think I will go with the RRS combo, but I have to ask. Have a look at the link, does the set up come with the clamp....

It looks like it does, even in the specs......what do you think?

Yes it does come with the screw clamp because it says it comes with the MH-01 Pro head, and the Pro version has the screw clamp: LINK (external link)

I looked at the 3 series Gitzo monopod you suggested but ended up buying the 2541 as it was lighter, cheaper and pretty rigid. Mine copes with over 7 Kilo of lens + camera quite happily, though it looks like it shouldn't!

Life is for living, cameras are to capture it (one day I will learn how!).

That was the monopod I had when I had a monopod setup with the RRS monopod head and it was a perfect fit! As long as youre not shooting a 500L/600L/800L on it its more than most would need!

Me too. The monopod I have is the GM5561. It may be shorter than what you're talking about in your link, but the bag that fits it is a Cullman. Extremely well-made, leather bottom. If your rig won't fit in this one, I'd get the next largest up. On mine, there is about an inch to spare at the top, even with the RRS head attached. $20.

If you use a big lens such as a long prime, I'd consider the 5561, which is beefy but not heavy, and has 5 segments for a shorter collapsed length.

I like that case! Good find for a monopod setup!
