Here is a thread I've wanted to start in order to offer encouragement to people who are just starting out in their bird photography addiction. I hope others can dig through their files and find some examples of their earlier work to compare with more current images to illustrate how far they've progressed over time.

Secondly, I wanted to use my 2000th post to offer my gratitude to those of you who have helped me develop as a bird photographer. Whether you've ever commented on my threads or not, your images have inspired me to improve my bird photography and I thank you. For those of you who have commented on my threads I thank you too for the encouragement you've offered. It might surprise some of you that my "history" as a more serious bird photographer only goes back to about February of 2011. I feel like I have learned a great deal from everyone here, and would express to the newly "addicted" bird photographers that the most important aspect of being able to improve is the desire to do so.

"THEN"

Here is one of the first bird images I ever captured....a male Downy Woodpecker.

and "NOW"

"THEN"

My first image with my EOS 7D....a White-breasted Nuthatch

IMAGE: http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp154/vroompuppy/Avian%20Friends/IMG_0001a_1024x700.jpg

and "NOW"

"THEN"

My first image with my EOS 5D MkII......a Mourning Dove

IMAGE: http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp154/vroompuppy/Avian%20Friends/IMG_0010a_1024x700.jpg

and "NOW"

IMAGE: http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp154/vroompuppy/Avian%20Friends/IMG_1351a_1024x700-1.jpg

I believe you can see some improvement in the images I capture now over those of the past year or 2.....I hope! For the newly addicted, it has been a combination of improvement in equipment, technique, and tactics which has helped me improve my captures. Most importantly I think a desire to learn and improve has helped me the most.
I "blame" all of you for helping me become even more addicted! :)
I hope others can find the time to add to this thread and show the people just starting out that it's not that hard to apply yourself, learn, and improve. Thanks for looking!

Oh man! You want me to do that? I can accept how BAD i was when starting bird photography Steve. It was my NIGHTMARE and i don't wanna go back there again! LOL! Can you believe your "Then" is still 1000x much better my "Then"? hahahaha....
It's unfair. Back then i had a 300D Rebel with a EF 100-300 f93.3 USM. Now i have 7D and Inca. It's all about gears yo!

I would be far too embarrassed to post some of my early images, but suffice it to say that all the time spent on the boards and learning from others has taken me a long way with my photography.

This forum makes a massive contribution to the quality of bird shots throughout the world. It allows us to see what is possible, and strive to improve.

When I show some of my pictures to people I know (both photographers and non-photographers), they typically respond with "Wow, those are great!" But, I know that I'm only about average when compared to the outstanding work displayed on this forum.

Oh dear, your first 'then' shot is better than most of my 'now' shots!

I really cant participate fully since I just started in this hobby back in Oct 2011, and only started shooting birds in January. So my then and now will look very much the same.:)

I have to say Cam that you improved so much. You went from looking like the pics were taken with a camera phone, to a certified Pro. Clearly your abiltiy to understand exposure improved drastically.

Great idea for a post Steve I'll look thru my drives and see if I still have my horrible beginner shots.

The modern Downy and Dove look REALLY good. Did you post the Downy before? Number 2 I mean?
Seems I saw it before but it looks MUCH better this time.Sharp but not over-sharpened.
Everything is better actually colors,clarity,etc.

Not a bad idea, Steve. I'll have to dig back through my archives later and see what I can dig up; mine won't go back too much farther as I've only been at it since about 2009...but it can sure be instructive for newcomers to see.

Love the 'improved' shots :)

@BirdBoy: The 'new' Marsh Wren shot is beautiful!

Interesting comparison Steve. I'm not sure I'd want to post my early shots especially since they were with a P&S camera. Both the hardware and the person have improved over time.

Great idea for a thread, Steve, and I will play when I can sit up straight for a bit longer again (some health issues at the moment). I too have some lovely 'thens' that I can share...

This is going to be a fun thread.

Two of my oldest images in my archives

My latest

IMAGE: http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t47/ahuxman58/2012/f9e466cf.jpg

It is a constant learning experience and lots of my learning has been attained here and other sites and forums with lots of great people who have given advice and info. For me its all about getting out there and getting the shots ( lots of crappy ones and maybe a few good ones). I have always been a do'er type of person not one to just read and sit about talking about it. Self teaching and learning from others has proven to be a great asset . I am nowhere close to where I want to be as a bird photog probably never will , but will keep learning and shooting and hopefully get a good image or two........ Just my take on it :D

A little L goes a long way.

Great idea for a topic. I think it's good to back through your older images and see how much you've progressed as a photographer over the years.

I'm still trying to find my very first image of an Eagle (it's burried somewhere on an external hard drive) but I remember the day like it was yesterday. I think it was taken on March 22, 2008 but I know it was the female Eagle from the nest I observe/photograph to this day.

This one was taken in February 2009 using my Rebel XT (350D and my very first camera) along with my 400mm f/5.6L lens.

This one taken recently using my 1D Mark 4 along with my 500mm f/4L + 1.4III extender.
