Hi, I like to use ND filters like a lot of people when water is involved, problem!!! today my Lee Pro Glass sliped from the holder hit the tripod legs and broke into many pieces, as you no Lee are expensive (£120/$190 for the Pro Glass) so has anyone used the Kenko 77mm ZETA ND Filter and your evaluation on it.
Thanks
Russ

Many Thanks,
Russell.

I've got a Zeta ND8 which I've never used, but if you don't get any replies by tomorrow I'll give it a whirl and report back.

Which body and lens do you use? If poss I'll try to shoot with the same setup to make my results as relevant as possible.

Hi, Thanks for reply. I use Canon 1Ds Mk II along with the Canon 17-40mm.
I am also looking into the Lee ND's rather than the Pro Glass trying to find out if there is a colour shift like there is with there 10 stop filter.
Thanks Again
Russ

Many Thanks,
Russell.

OK. I've got a 5D2 and 16-35 II. I'll fire off some comparative test shots for sharpness and colour shift tomorrow, when daylight returns. :D

I had a bit of a brain fart last night. The filter is 77mm so it won't fit the 16-35, so I've had to make do with my 24-70 at 24mm. Here are unaltered raw images shot with daylight white balance on an overcast day :-

1. Bare lens. Note the RGB values taken from the white paintwork on the house.

2. Zeta ND8 filter attached. Note the RGB values taken from the white paintwork on the house. They have all increased a little, but pretty much in step with each other.

3. LCW ND500 (9 stop) attached. Note the RGB values taken from the white paintwork on the house. There is a big shift to blue. Shooting 9 stops brighter actually blew part of the sky so I had to dial back to 8 2/3 to hold the sky. Even so it is still brighter than the other shots. This is no 9 stop filter.

4. 100% comparison of centre of frame between bare lens and Zeta ND8

5. 100% comparison of edge of frame between bare lens and Zeta ND8

6. 100% comparison of the closest I could get to a corner of the frame which was close enough to the plane of focus to be decently sharp with the bare lens.

Results might have been sharper if I'd remembered to use MLU. At least I used the self timer. :)

Hi, Many Many thanks for that input, looking at your results it looks like a good choice for extending exposure enough without the blue cast you tend to get with the 10 stop filters and is obviously enough to blur water without going OTT.
Also noticed that there was not as much noise on the longer exposures as I would have expected so another plus for this filter.
Again thanks for the work you put into the answer.
Russ

Many Thanks,
Russell.

Interesting comment about noise. I had the camera set to Auto for Long Exposure Noise Reduction, which I think kicks in only for shots of 1 second or more. TBH I didn't notice whether it was invoked for the 3.2 second shot, but here is an unedited side by side comparison at 100% for the 3 stop filter and the 9(ish) stop filter.

Hi, with what you have put up I will for the price get one of these although I do wish companies like Hoya and Kenko (although I believe thet are the same company) had delved into making square filters to fit Lee holders etc etc, I think they missed the boat on this.
Thanks Again
Russ

Many Thanks,
Russell.
