Not the cameras. Repeat, not the cameras. When you look at Nikon and Canon systems, what advantage does one system have over the other. I'm assuming here both are good, high quality, cameras and systems. I just want to know what one system might offer that they other does not.

Example,

Used market. That appears to be huge for the Canon and that's important to me. Lots of stuff out there...it seems. Maybe it's because I'm here a lot. I do see lots of Nikon stuff on Fred Miranda.

Used prices seem to be cheaper for Canon.

And yes, I know this is a Canon forum. No, it's not about which camera is better. please.

I picked the canon system based off finding a good deal on my first dslr, the Xti. I'm lucky I found that deal because I prefer the canon lens system. There seems to be more choices and the pro lenses seem to run a little less than comparable lenses from nikon.

Interesting question .
I truly have no idea , and am interested to hear any input .

Dusty recollections of someone saying that Canon high end lenses are more affordable , but take that with a huge pinch of salt !

Steve ninja posted the same point there ! :)

If you're into shooting primes, IMHO, Canon's the way to go.

I've always seen higher prices for Nikon. Don't know why. Just supply and demand I guess.

It seems silly now, but I initially chose Canon over Nikon because I preferred their UI in general.

That and PowerShot doesn't sound as lame as Coolpix.

Check out my feedback here.

I chose Canon because the feedback I got online was that Canon did superior AF lenses. I was never going to any other manufacturer out of Canon or Nikkon for the body.

No real advantage between Canon and Nikon. Both produce great system and both have been around for a long time. UI is a personal thing. Some people like Canon and other like Nikon or Sony or others. As far as used market goes, I used to see more Canon but lately there's just as much Nikon equipments on the used market. I think you'll be happy with either system. Pick one and just don't look back.

Nikon has a much better flash system, and much more consistently accurate AF through their whole range of bodies in my experiences.

I would consider their lens a respective wash for the most part - with Canon being better if you want super fast primes.

Canon is far superior in video.

I chose canon because of the availability on lens's for the low end bodies. Back when I had a rebel, the nikon equivalents didnt have AF in body, so your lens selection was quite minimal if you wanted AF. I stay with canon because I prefer the ergonomics and UI.

#1 Reason: Canon has better forums :-P
#2 Reason: Canon has a VASTLY larger used gear market. I buy and sell and test out gear that I want this way. For every 15 ads for a Canon gear I see on craigslist, I might see 1 for a Nikon, and usually its a entry level DSLR or something. I have hardly any recollection of high end Nikon gear appearing on my local Craigslist.

The primary reason I chose Canon over the others was I wanted a 400mm lens and
Canon offers a variety of those including the "affordable" 400mm 5.6 and 100-400mm zoom.
I required "affordable".

#1 is very true. But I wonder if POTN wasn't here if it would continue to be true. Things thin out in the other forums and it's more equal.

#2 I tend to see both on CL in my area, but as with most gear on CL, they ask strangely high prices. They do not research before they price.

Add another vote for Gynormous second-hand market! I mean, i've been having the opportunity to have HUGE FUN playing with different lens and bodies, even made a few bucks along the way through all these buying and selling. Don't think other brand provides enough pool to have such fun.

I went digital about 3 years ago. I started with Canon simply because more, good glass was available, at a reasonable price, that fit all of their DSLRs. All of the EF lenses I have purchased work just fine on my Canon film body (Elan 7NE) also. This may or may not be a reflection of reality. It was my perception at the time.
