LL's review came over quite weak towards the end of the review, it came across as anti Canon. Looks as though they avoided one of its strongest points of IQ with very high ISO,s. They call it a slow lens, it will be if you only test it up to 640 ISO. As for the tilted screen comment, it came over as critism for critism sake.

Canon 5D mk3, 50mm 1.4, 17-40L, 70-200L, 100-400L, Canon 100L macro, Canon 2 x G1X, Speedliite 430 EX all supported by Gitzo and Benro.

That's not a super slow lens but sure enough it is not a fast lens either... I don't see any problem to call it a slow lens. I found the review was quite balanced and fair.

I have been using a G1X for a few days now and I must say that if you ask for the highest quality results from the most pocketable package then the G1X delivers, never mind the speed of the lens or its macro abilities, the image quality is staggering.

L's review came over quite weak towards the end of the review,

I know that was strange. I saw a much earlier report where they were just raving about an older G series camera (G10 or G11) and were actually comparing it to Canon's highest end DSLR. I would have thought that they would have been absolutely gushing with what looks like a huge improvement in IQ over the older G series.

I think you mean this comparison of the G10 with a Hasselblad;

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/kidding.shtml (external link)

I have the G9 and G11, plus the Canon 2.0x tele and 0.75x wide converters. I very often do not bring the converter lenses, because I like to travel light. I also bought an NX100 last summer when the prices dropped, because it had an APS-C sensor. Since then I've purchased the 30mm (f2.0) pancake and 50-200 II zoom lenses at reasonable prices. However, I only tend to carry the camera with 30mm attached, since it is then as small as my G cameras.

I mention the above, because I'm discovering I don't like to have to carry lenses like I used to in the "old" days with my film SLR kit. I also want something that I can carry easily on my belt. The more I read about the G1 X, the more it sounds like what I will eventually want. I do find an increasing need to produce good high ISO shots, and take them hand held. The images being posted prove the camera's capabilities for my wishes, but the price puts it out of my current reach. My G9 and G11 can produce excellent macros, especially when I use my 430EX II. Being able to use my 430EX II on a G1 X is also a plus. I would most likely keep the G11 for close macro, and also have the G1 X for everything else.

I think the G1 X is a great hybrid for now, and meets the needs of a lot of people. I'm not a pro, and I'm not coming from a DSLR, so I would be comfortable with the G series performance levels. The NX100 can produce some nice images with it's larger sensor, but it cannot compete for image quality at higher ISO produced by the G1 X. The NX100 will fill my large sensor needs for a while, but I ultimately do not want to travel any farther down the lens acquisition road. I think a lot of people have the same thoughts. I'm looking forward to the G2 X or G14.

Dennis
