There's lot to see up here in the U.P., but you have to drive a ways to get there. I live in Marquette, MI, so I'm kind of partial to the central, western, and northern areas. Here's a link to a suggested travel route for several days.

If you can go in August you'll miss 95% og all the biting bugs and the weather is usually the best. exp if you camping. up by Big Bay you have a shot at seeing a moose, Keweenaw is also really nice photogenic area. You have the Sault Ste Locs, Picture Rocks is a must,Lotta wildlife just north of Gladstone(don't hit a deer, they will be in the road so keep you eyes pealed). that's what I can think of off the top of my head. Mackinac Island is a must, you can stay in Mackinaw city kinda a nice place to visit. I know I can think of more just late here and I'm tired.
Either way have a wonderful safe trip and post up pics!

You have to do Leland Michigan and see the little fishing village. It's very small but a great place and the bar further north about 3 miles on the right is fantastic. Locals will know the name.

Also search Legg's Inn Resturant

Thanks to everyone for all the advice and recommendations. Due to the fact that I'm traveling in July near the week of the 4th, lodging is both challenging and expensive. But I found a cute little rental cottage up near Suttons Bay for $700. So, while not quite as fun as the adventure of a tour, it seems more reasonable and simpler to organize.

I will be a couple hours from Charlevoix, 3 hours from Mackinac and 20 minutes to Sleeping Bear Dunes. I was most interested in this county anyway, though I'll be sad to exclude Pictured Rocks, the various north woods water falls and Saugatuck. Considering everything, I think it will be a fine trip and it will allow me the freedom to shoot a particular view on more than one day. I'll get the road trip in perhaps this fall for the colors where I can include Pictured Rocks and Mackinac Island.

Well if you don't mind going about another hour north of Mackinaw then you may want to check out Tahquamenon falls. Nice park and nice falls.

You're missing two of the best places on Lake Michigan...don't go to St. Joe, nothing to see there. South Haven is nice, Saugatuck is ok (I live in SH, 20 mins from St. Joe, 15 mins from Saugatuck). Definitelystop at Silver lake sand dunes...it has the tallest working lt house on the Great Lakes; then go to Pentwater...one of Michigan's best kept secrets (try to bethere on Thurs evenings). I think it's much better than Saugatuck, personally - definitely one of the best beaches on the Great Lakes! TC & surrounding area is cool. Tahquamenon Falls is a must!

I agree with jwilson. Below are some of the places I like to go, and I included some shots just to give you an idea of what the sights look like in the area (sorry if it was to much... I got carried away).

Ludington is another great place and good for sunsets:

As jwilson said, Silver Lake and Dunes are great, and the Lighthouse is one of the best:

And Tahquamenon Falls is cool. This is the small falls there... the larger one (upper) is much more spectacular:

Some of the most photogenic places in Michigan are in the U.P.. Pictured Rocks is a must for me; and if you like waterfalls, then stay a night in Munising because there a lot of waterfalls around the area and you have Pictured Rocks in your back yard. If you are looking for a cheap but clean place to stay, then stay at the Super 8 just outside of town at $69/night.

The other place that has a lot of water falls and great senery is Porcupine Mountain State Park. Stay at the AmericInn outside the park and be sure to catch the sunrise at "Lake of the Clouds".

An on the way back south, if you can hit Bond Falls it is beautiful.

Unfortunately, this is a lot of driving. There is a lot of distance between sights in the U.P. which is why I would stick with Pictured Rocks and/or Porcupine Mountains because they have the most concentration of sights in one area.

Also, as you will notice I do not spend much time in cities, so they are missing from my wish list.

I hope this helps:)

Thanks that is a big help. My trip keeps getting pushed back, so now I am waiting until September, which I think will be better for fall colors. I don't think July will be as nice for photography anyway. If I find myself out of work, I may decide to take 3 weeks and camp my way around these areas to save money.
