As the title says, do you use your DSLR to take random snapshots that you typically would take on a point and shoot/camera phone or use your DSLR purely for pro, arty pics?

i personally use mine for both, ie random snapshots of family and friends plus actual arty pics

I shoot the same way regardless of whether I have a MkIV or a G12 with me and I want to get the best image I can get within the limitations I face at the time.

Obviously, I'm not going to use a 500mm lens to shoot at a house party and I'm not going to use a G12 at an airshow. You have to give your potential situation at least a little thought to minimize the limitations.

A little forethought will help mitigate a lot of head scratching later...

The longer I work with my EOS DSLR cameras, the less I like point & shoot cameras and such.
And the more I work with manual focus, the more I dislike my Canon EF lenses. Have at the moment a EOS 5D with the EF 50/1.4 for prepared for my wife, with that see manage to make snapshots of our baby. But I didn´t like that system now, because of the hassle with the few AF points that didn´t match my image composition.

Yea i agree but i think some people dont even use there DSLR and a bog standard wide angle lens at a party and tend to leave it home and just use a point and shoot or there iphone.

My Cousin in law use to bring and use his 40d and 24-105L to family parties but now he has stopped bringing it in and instead uses his wifes(my cousins) point and shoot instead

As the only camera's I have access to is my 7D and 5D2 and the wifes 550D which used to be mine I use a dslr for everything. Having said that, I very rarely just take a snapshot, I always take my time to check the composition to see if I can improve it. Sometimes, depending on subject I come out with a poor photo due to background etc but then I try to improve it in PP if possible.

Not a pro by any means, but I currently use my DSLR for everything. I am fairly certain that my point and shoot doesn't even have a charge on the battery.

That said, I have contemplated recently charging the point and shoot and using that when "necessary" instead of carrying the SLR.

Knowing me, I would end up charging the P&S, carying both the P&S and DSLR (not to mention the phone)... and use the DSLR anyway. LOL.

I use mine for option A. I bought the DSLR due to the shutter lag on my P&S. I got tired of trying to take pictures of my grandkids and most of the time I lost a good picture due to the lag. As I am learning to "properly" use my 40D more, I find myself giving each photo more thought before I snap the pic.

If you actually take a shot while you intentionally point your camera at something it's not random. If your camera went off periodically and made images, that would be random.

I don't. I carry a small p&s with me at all times - i don't lug around my dslr unless it's something that I know ahead of time that I want to get exceptional shots at.

If I'm going to take a picture, I take the dSLR. I've tried substituting the G7 or the S90, but am ultimately disappointed in the output of those cameras, comparatively.

When i mean random i mean general snapshots of family/friends and general Touristy snapshots.

WHY are you taking the word "random" literally?
