If you recall last month I posted up shots from a hike to Lake Haiyaha. We went back Saturday to see what conditions were like. We knew that the forecast had no clouds, and it hadn't snowed up there in over a week. We also picked this spot because The Photographers Epherimus showed us that the nearly full moon would set along the edge of Otis Peak and the sunrise would light up Hallett Peak to the right.

The blue ice of Lake Haiyaha is really something. If you live in the area and haven't been up there now is the time to go!

While I was taking the shot above, my buddy shot one of me balancing precariously on the ice.

I want to go! Snowshoes required though? I don't have any at the moment. Just some slip on stuff for my shoes for getting around on ice.

Excellent work, Jon. Always enjoy seeing the great mountains of Colorado. Also, liked what your friend took. KUDOS.

Awesome pics Jon! Haven't been up to RMNP in about a month (and after my (deer encounter) hiccup in Moab on 3/5, I am feeling the need, now that I have replaced my totaled Explorer with a newsed 08 F350 Super Duty (Powerstroke) 4x4. Thinking I need to get up there soon, given the warmer weather we've had lately.

Blue ice is just stunning. :D

Jon,

A very nice set. Thanks for sharing.... also, thank you so much for the reference to The Photographer's Ephemeris (TPE). It took me a minute to figure out how to add new locations (move the map around then hit "shift" "C", then use the + sign on the right hand side of the page after selecting "locations".)

I grew up out West and still miss the mountains.... but not winter. Oddly enough, the skies in Florida remind me of the skies in Montana. Of course, we only have reverse/negative mountains here.

Hard to say as it depends on when you go. We had them, but probably didn't need them as the snow was pretty hard just about the whole way, even getting off of the trail. There was no shortage of snow and you could tell it was deep.

Thanks Pete. It was the first hike I've done since last fall which showed signs of the warmer weather to come. Between the mild temps, lack of wind and hard pack snow it was a real pleasure!

You're welcome Kim. Be sure to check out the couple videos which will explain how to use it. I think you can find them doing a Google search. It really is an invaluable tool and every landscape photog should be using it.
