Not sure why. There are sharp crampons on the bottom of my snowshoes which grip the ice very well, and there is virtually no chance that the ice is going to break. It's feet thick.

There is an inherent danger going into the mountains, especially in the winter which we respect and prepare for as much as possible. This year there was a larger than normal avalanche danger for example. But the trails we take planned for accordingly.

Thanks AZ. This shot is a 4 shot exposure blend. 35mm f/5.0, ISO 400, 2 - 60 seconds.

Great shots! Thanks for sharing these, RMNP is one of my favorite places. I have been up to Haiyaha a couple times in the winter but I have never seen ice like you captured - great stuff.

Thanks guys!

Three reasons that I can think of for that. If the ice were covered with snow, obviously you wouldn't see it. That happened to us one trip up.

The second is that you were there early enough that the ice hadn't settled yet. The water level under the ice drops over the course of the winter after the ice has formed. The ice falls with the water level and breaks where there are rocks resisting this movement.

I've been told, though I haven't seen it myself, that soon the blue ice will be covered up again. It was explained that as the season continues on and the days become warmer the ice will begin to melt in the day time and the often blowing snow will stick to it, covering the the color. I don't know if this is true, but the source of the information is a friend who's been shooting up there for years. If you were there late in the winter, you would see the ice forms sticking up, but they would not have been blue.
