So here is a little different question for you all. I have a 1dv mkiv and want to go back to full frame. To date I haven't used every feature that the 1d has, but I really like the size and feel of the 1 series. I am on the fence about just buying the 5d to complement the mkiv. I shoot a few things, landscape, (starting to get into portraiture), wildlife. So I could benifit from both a 1.0 sensor and the 1.3 for extra reach. The highest ISO I have really used is 6400 which I like how well it cleaned up in post, so I don't think I really need 50 or 100k ISO that maybe cleaner in the 1DX compared to the mkiv. I am happy with the mkiv AF especially coming from the 5d mkii so if it is better than that is a plus. I like some of the specs on paper for the 1dx that the 5d doesn't have, but probably don't need them.

What would you do in this situation?

Off topic I just picked up a 300 is l 2.8 mki, I have a 1.4 extender and I saw some examples with the 2.0 mkiii and they looked really good. Any thoughts on that combination since I know it was optimized for the mkii and not mki for AF speed. I tried searching but wasn't really coming up with much.

Thanks

Richard

That would be a tough choice. It would be a lot cheaper to buy the Canon 5D Mark III instead of selling your 1D Mark IV and almost all the money for the 5D Mark III just to buy the 1DX. It would be nice to have two cameras or you can spend all the money and buy the 1DX and have one body. I only need one body so I would go for the 1DX myself.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

I guess I am not opposed to having two bodies.

I'd keep the 1d4. its just such a perfect body.
You wont pick up much IQ with the 5d3 I bet and you would lose some "reach".

I would go with the 2 bodies, 1DIV and 5DIII. Not only would you have a 1D body, but also a more compact package with the 5DIII if you did not want to lug around a big body. If that did not work out, you could always sell the two bodies and buy a 1DX.

Yeah I think I am going to do that. I don't think the difference of the af between the 5d and 1dx will be that noticeable at least maybe for me.

If I had a 1d4, I would save my money and buy a 5d2. a used 5d2 is about 1900 cheaper than a 5d3. even a refurbished one from canon is 1750 cheaper. for shooting landscape, spend that money on the tse 24, or 16-35II or whatever. you will not see much benefit from 5dIII. if you were going to consolidate, and wanted one camera, then 5d3 is better, since it has pro autofocus for your wildlife shooting and faster fps.

I would keep the 1DIV and add the 5D3. The 5d2 compromises in too mant areas for me. Ymmv.

Im seriously thinking about grabbing another used low count 5D2. Really, if you think about it, ive been using the 5D2 for 2 yrs with center point and get what i need for formals and shallow depth needs. I think the MKIV files look as nice as the 5D2 files. Im not inclined to say that such a fine camera as the MKIV is any less than a great camera because the 5D series finally got a good aF system.....the only edge i see is the 5D3 has a full frame sensor. So does a 5D2 and its a heck of alot cheaper. But even with the updates on the 5D3,,, you Cant say its going to outperform and MKIV.....I dont think so

I guess if the 5D3 is you main body than maybe. But if your shooting weddings. you need 2-3 bodies anyway. So makes more sense to keep the MKIV and a toss up for the 5D2 v/s 5D3 for me. Ive got great AF systems for needs and speed needs with the MKIV and MKIII.

I leaning towards a pass on the 5D3

after picking up my 1d4, not sure what else someone would need in a camera? amazing AF, dual card slots, great high iso performance, 10FPS, 1080P video w/ 60FPS, built like a tank, 920,000 pixel'd screen...literally, what else does someone need?

ps; this is my new main, over the 5d2. the 1d3 (which is for sale) was used secondary to the 5d2.

I've been going back and forth over exactly this for a while. I've always kind of liked having one body that could do everything well, as I do portrait work, sports shooting, occasional events/weddings. The 1d4 has been great for me, but I've really been wanting to move to full-frame. The specs on the 1dx look to be just what I want, a full-frame camera that should outperform my 1d4 with all the types of shooting I do. However, when I saw the specs for the 5d3, I was thinking the 1d4/5d3 combination is pretty powerful. I could use the 1d4 for sports shooting, the 5d3 for portraits, use both for weddings, or really just grab either one in a pinch. I'm torn and still wrestling with this.

Oh, I forgot about the second question the OP asked. I have the 300 f2.8 IS mk1 also. I have both the 2x ii and 2x iii. I definitely see an improvement in IQ between the mark ii and iii versions of the 2x extender. The improvement isn't huge, but it's there. I kept my 1.4x ii because there seemed to be no reason to upgrade to the 1.4 iii.

See this is the actual dilemma I am in.

What is your credit card number?

On a serious note the I think I may just wait for the 1dx and sell the mkiv. I would just be afraid I wouldnt use the mkiv and it would just sit collecting dust
