I have an interview to assist a photographer around my area. Question is, how should I prepare. I've never been to one of these so some pointers will be helpful.

I'm thinking a portfolio of my work is step one. Not sure after that.

Thanks!

If I were interviewing for a second shooter I'd want to see images, maybe 20 from a single wedding, and 20 of your best. Or maybe 10 of each. As a second shooter you probably don't do as much posing or interaction, but say you're with the girls and they're with the guys you'll need to be capable of acting as main.

I would also expect a second shooter to assist, to help with lighting and gear. Two photographers is usually pointless during the wedding party images, a voice activated light stand (ie a person) is far more useful.

Thanks Tim. You always provide helpful information. Is there a good way or better way to present the images.

Loose prints in a folder is nicer than a cheap album, IMHO. A tablet or similar would be good too, if you happen to have one that has a nice screen.

An iPad is a tablet, yes. I have an Asus Transformer, which I prefer to iPads, which is why I referred to a device type not a product.

What I want in my second shooters:
- to know that you have a good eye; that you can see things in an interesting and creative way
- to know that you have good control of light and your flash in particular
- that you have sufficient equipment
- that you will represent me with professionalism
- that I can count on you and you'll be reliable

These are most certainly not in correct order, though.

Great idea. Would it be okay if I create a private gallery on my site then show that as a slideshow or does it have to be separate.

Great advice here. This helps me pick out what shots I'll add. I'm going to try to focus on the shots the main shooter doesn't see.

Online gallery with your work.
Equipment list.

Then perhaps talk to the person on the phone.

No. Use a portfolio type app, not a web app. Websites usually downsample images, and you can't be sure you'll have connectivity unless you have 3G, then it'll be slow. With an app the images look good and you can swipe through them.

Any chance you know of any good portfolio apps. ;)

I would also prepare a list of your equipment inventory.
