Hi all. I took this shot of one section of the milky way last night and was curious to work out what the main color (nebula?) is in the shot. I tried to find something in stellarium but I can't seem to find it.

Also please feel free to tell me how I may be able to improve these two images, as it's an area of photography that I'm very new to. Taken with a 7D and 135L shot at F2 30 shots 3 seconds each at ISO 3200 then stacked via deepskystacker. I did learn that 3 seconds is too long as the stars are quite streaky when viewed at 100%

I did my best shot so far of Orion nebula too last night, but I'm still trying to get as much out as I can before I post it.

Here is the southern cross. I notice a brown center or rather is it falloff around the edges? Am I right to suggest white balance is off with that brown tinge? The 135 just fits the crux in btw. I live in a medium size regional area and there was a bit of light pollution as I did this fairly early on in the evening. Once again any tips to bring out more in this shot would be very appreciated. Should I darken it to emphasize the crux better?

+1 for Eta Carina. Search for it as NGC3372. You also have the Wishing Well Cluster (NGC3532) down to the left.
I like your southern cross. I quite like that level of darkness but I think that's a matter of taste. If you exposed for a much longer time, it would come out with a straw colored background (the milky way color) but many prefer a black or slightly blue background.
You've just caught some of the Jewel Box cluster at the bottom of the frame and on the right corner is some of the dark gas/dust that makes up the coalsack.
If those aren't cropped, they're a pretty good endorsement of that lens wide open. The stars seem nice and round right out to the edges. The second one could do with a gradient removal (google for the technique).
Those are excellent results. Get yourself a mount.

Thanks for the ID guys.

Thanks for the tips SteveInNz. I'll google gradient removal in the morning and check it out. I love the 135L for general shots, and it is known to be very sharp wide open and I figured 135 and F/2 would surely have to make a half decent image of the sky, so I thought I'd give it a go on some night images.

Yes the southern cross is 90% ,I only cropped the edges ever so slightly after DSS did it's thing to align them but the eta carina is cropped a bit more to show the nebula. Here is a 100% shot single image from that stack to show what the lens is like at the edges for you. I did no mods, straight out of the camera with default DPP settings and resize to 1024. As I just uploaded this one here rather than flickr I had to save it down at 53% quality to fit into the 130K limit. excuse the noise, it was at ISO 3200

As far as mounts go, I'm going to start with a barn door tracker to get the feel for this without spending a fortune. Of course when my "cheap" tracker fails and I have spent as much as I would have on a proper tracker to begin with, I'll then buy a proper tracker and be done with it!
