Well these are the two options I was considering. I really like using my camera with a grip so I've bought them for my XTi, 50D, 7D, 5D MkII so I factor it into the price. That make the 5D Mk III $3848. I'm now seeing some 1Ds MkIII as low as $4300. There both full frame so what would you go for? Is the new AF in the 5D MkIII better than the on in the 1Ds?

I'd like your opinion. If I go with the 5D MkIII am I getting a better combo now that it has 6 fps and the 1Dx AF system and the upgraded build quality?

I was in the same boat and chose to gamble on the 5D3.

My decision was just based on newness I guess.

I won't really know if I made the right choice till I get the camera in my hands and start shooting with it. Even then I still won't have shot with the 1Ds, so it all comes down to me just being happy with the choice I made.

I can't see either choice being a wrong one if the 5D3 lives up to the hype.

As an owner of 1Ds M3, I suggest that you go with 5D M3. The reason is that 1Ds M3 is using five-year old technology, and one never knows what to expect in a used camera. With a brand new 5D M3, lighter and cheaper, you can enjoy the latest technology and comparable resolution...

I have been thinking about getting 5D M3 for my 50L as a walk-around body.

Unless you need the weather sealing and the form factor of the 1DsMKIII, there's ZERO reason to go with that camera.

Thanks, for the opinions coming in. I've certainly been leaning toward the 5D MkIII and do have one on pre-order but I saw a couple of 1Ds Mk III available so I thought I'd ask.

As far as older technology I'm a little bit jaded here since I develop IC's for a living. A lot of time the progress in technology is really no more than the same features for less money. (which is why it great) but not necessarily more performance when measured on an absolute scale. I mean that's why you can introduce the 5D Mk III at $3500 and not the $7000 to $8000 of the 1Ds MkIII. That said I was more interested in how they stack up in absolute terms. i.e. Noise, AF, and other performance like FPS, etc.

A lot of time the newer cheaper versions also jettison feature to get the price down since it is a mid tear rather than a top of the pyramid product. The best example I know of that is the PS3. Each version is cheaper than the last but the performance of the first (with the exception of disk capacity) is still as good as the latest and a lot of features were thrown out of the newer ones to keep the cost going down.
