50D to 5Dc: a dumb idea?

Goodness, here we go again...

I bought my 50D new last January, have enjoyed it ever since and it is not holding me back whatsoever. I just have the lust for full frame. Is the move from an excellent condition 50D to a (hopefully) same condition 5Dc worth it? Does Canon still service the 5Dc? Both are discontinued cameras, however mine is newer as I bought it so recently.

Yes, they still service the 5D. Its worth it from an IQ perspective. I have a 40D which is pretty close to the 50D in terms of performance, I bought the 5D and the 40D is relegated to backup use. The 5D is a bit old tech, the screen isnt great, you dont have micro adjust, you dont have an integrated flash menu in the camera, but its a superior performer.

I'm not terribly worried about the screen or not having the in camera flash menu. I've used my dad's 1D2 extensively and never missed it.

The IQ and sensor is what I'm wanting out of the 5Dc. If something were to happen to it and repair costs weren't worth it, I'd still have my wife's 60D as back up I suppose.

As long as you don't crop heavily using the 50D, you won't really have an issue with the lower pixel density of the 5D.

Giving up microadjust would cause me to hesitate. A lot. It's just such a convenient security blanket sometimes, and worth having if you can avoid sending something to Canon out of warranty.

Many people make a similar switch and love it. It's not quite right for me, is all.

Can you keep both? I have been toying with the idea of picking one up as well.

Probably not, would like to but I'm saving up for a move in June to Chicago. It's still just an idea I'm tossing around.

I'm thinking of doing the exact same thing.
On a highly related note, would the gripped 50D + 17-85 be a good trade for the 5Dc, or am I being unrealistic?

i'm seeing 5dc's here going for 700ish and 50d's at around 550 -600? i think its reasonable as long as you find someone to trade or buy it for that much

Is that just for the 50D body? I'd be putting the lens up as well, as I'd only have FF.

Depends what you use it for. I used a 50D as a second body for sports shooting as it is quite robust and quite quick. 5D is a different camera; old technology, quite slow, but I love the image quality. Considering upgrade to 5DIII but I'm finding it hard to give up the creamy, film like (at high ISOs) image quality of the 5D.

If you can handle the old technology (like no Auto ISO) and the slowness, it is a great wee camera.

I'd be putting up my 50D and BG-E2N grip for sale if I made the switch. I'd want about $750 for the pair.

I'm definitely not into sports shooting..unless sports portraiture counts. hahaha.

Ha ha. Ah well, if it's portraits and you've got some nice glass then you will love the 5D. So to your original question - no, not dumb idea, great idea. Enjoy.
