let me put it this way, with -1EV dialed in, that image as shot has significantly more light in it -vs- what my eyes were seeing at the time!!!!

Autofocus with f/8...

I think the issue came up earlier in the thread, or maybe it was somewhere else. Anyway, I did some experimenting with a few combinations that would give me an f/8 lens. First, I took the 300/4 and the 2X teleconverter and tried to autofocus. No dice - as expected, the registered f/8 combination would not work.

Next, I took my 300/2.8 and stacked a 2X and 1.4X teleconverter on it to give an 840 mm f/8 lens combination. Now, with the stacked converters (Mk II converters, I don't think that the new Mk III version will stack), the camera only "sees" one of them so that the autofocus logic thinks it has a 600 mm f/5.6 lens and will try to autofocus. The result - it works, but it's a bit dodgy. It hunts back and forth rapidly at times before settling in on correct focus. My advice is that if you need to do this, do it very sparingly and don't hold the shutter halfway very long - the lens focus motor is getting worked very hard here.

Anyway, I did get reasonable results. This is a crop (not exactly 100%, more like 75%-ish) of one of the stacked lens/converter shots:

Sorry about the size - I'll try to keep them down a bit in the future.

yes, the AF hunted a bit and really needed a brighter image on the screen to see enough detail to lock on, and it ONLY worked with the 5 center double cross points, but daaaaaaamn was it dark, and to get a shot that looks that decent?

I really like the high ISO capability and that was a factor for me to an extent (though in a perfect world, I'm back doing landscapes at ISO 100-200), but I really haven't cared that much about the > ISO 6400 capability and super low-light AF.

But you got me going wow with this one. I think I'm starting to get it now. It's not about perfect. It's about getting something useful when you don't have alternatives.

It looks like someone has their work cut out for them to restore this old classic. :D

These were 7 exposure brackets taken on my spankin new 5D3. I have the RC version of camera raw 6.7 so I can edit using CS5 but...neither SNS-HDR or Photomatix are able to process these raw files. I had to open them in Bridge and save as .dng in order to do the merging/tonemapping.

exactly. I'm mostly a landscape and arch type of shooter (that's where I make money). I also shoot weddings from time to time, but I use my camera to document my family and have for the last 4 years via a PAD... So I don't "need" the high ISOs or the low light AF, but I'll certainly use it.

The manual says about formatting cards in camera. If capacity is 128 GB or lower the card will be formatted with FAT filesystem. Larger cards with exFAT and from that I would assume that yes you can use cards larger than 128 GB! But who can afford cards of that size ??

Thank Tommy,

Loss 128GB files will be the most painful experience for any shooter; so I'm getting 64GB card instead.

The Canon manual must be written by lawyers, as lots details are very ambiguous

I've so far failed to see my raw files in aperture, so I downloaded the beta version of CS6.
I then downloaded the beta version of adobe raw 6.7 and STILL can't view my raw files.

Has anyone else got raw working on the cs6 beta version?

As far as I know, you need the Adobe DNG converter.
