Off the Blue Ridge Parkway

taken with the 5D3 and 24-105L. I don't feel Ive been able to get the sharpness Im seeing on this thread from most of the postings. Not sure if Im doing something wrong. Many say their keeper rate shot up through the roof with this camera, but I have yet to see that big of a jump. When I zoom to 100% in aperture, Im not seeing the same kind of sharpness that many of you are posting with this camera. Is it me, am I being too picky or have the wrong settings?

They look good to me as well. My keeper rates have gone through the roof in terms of stopping the action. The AF camera is just much more capable than the mk2. As far as IQ goes I can't say I see any real difference.

Are you shooting Jpg or RAW? If Jpg what are your picture style settings? If RAW how are you PP?
You say when you zoom to 100 % you don't see the same sharpness as others posted. Others don't post at 100%.

Maybe try micro adjusting your lenses to the 5D3... they might need a slight adjustment.

I just bought Focal Pro and I'm planning on going through all of my lenses this weekend to micro adjust them. I haven't noticed any issues, but it's nice to know your lenses are completely dialed into your body.

Todd, so far I haven't needed to MA any of the lenses I have used with the 5D3 since I took it out of the box, and particularly the 100-400L performs better than it did on any previous body with the MA done with FoCal, something I hadn't imagined possible.

I've been told not to mess with MA with the 5D3 unless you are clear that a lens is front or back focusing. Haven't gotten into it yet, but apparently the 5D3 has new ways of working with lenses for AF.

So far I have used the 100-400L, 35L, 100L 2.8 IS Macro, 135L and 24-105L with the 5D3 and though all needed MA with the 5D2 and 7D, none have needed any MA with the 5D3 for the shots I have made with it.

Admittedly I am a bit puzzled by this, and if I can manage to pry my finger off the shutter button long enough, I'll check my lenses in detail, though I am not going to automatically run all through FoCal as I did with previous bodies.

Hmm, very interesting... I was going to test them with FoCal and see where they lie, but I'm with you, all of my lenses so far, have been spot on, on the 5D3. However, mine were all spot on, on the 5D2 as well.

I am going to test them this weekend, but I may be more reserved in actually adjusting them, we'll see.

Hey todd, can you post your findings please. I've been thinking of getting focal and would love to know your findings

RAW. Im not a PP expert. Recently got Aperture and have been doing slight PP. Just downloaded a few presets to compare it to my adjustments. Not seeing any difference. Maybe Im looking at my 100% zooms on my monitor and expecting perfect sharpness… Need to continue working it

You can't zoom in to 100% and expect to see optimal sharpness...

Definitely will. There's been two updates that specifically address the 5D3 lately, so I think Rich is getting things nailed down for this body. As I said most of my lenses are spot on, only my 35L had any sort of MA (never actually tested my 24L though, I've never had complaints with it.)

I haven't had a chance to really try out all of my lenses with the new 5D3 yet, so I will run them through FoCal and see where they stand.

Todd, I have used FoCal thoroughly since it first came out on 2 Jan. and found it to be spot on when used clearly according to instructions.

Version 1.4 is now out which includes the 5D3 specifically, so I would be sure to only use that version to MA the 5D3, particularly because of the 5D3's ability to be MAed for two separate focal lengths with zooms.

Hmm, ive thought about picking up focal pro but can't stomach the price (at least right now). My 50L requires no MA and when i think it does everything just looks bad lol. My 85 1.8 is the same..
