MatthewK Cream of the Crop More info | Mar 24, 2012 16:15 | #1158 michaeldorian wrote in post #14145660 I wanted to get a true representation of how the camera performed in various standard conditions to check if the camera is actually working properly and how it stacks up to my gone but never forgotten MKII. As like some of you, I was pretty disappointed with the images from earlier in this thread. As many people seem to blog about discuss, I was too hyper concerned with the softness of some of the SOOC photos. I took over 200 shots over the last day and here's a few that represent the range. These were shot with various ISO but at very high shutter speeds to ensure camera shake is reduced to an absolute minimum. They are also pretty run of the mill, but I was more concerned with finding various lighting conditions and textures to test. What do you guys think? Does this look like acceptable sharpness? I'm focusing on sharpness as that is something you can't really fix much in post. Color rendition is easy. After comparing photos and reading back my notes, I've come to the tentative conclusion that the older MKII produces slightly sharper photos out of the camera. It requires less post-processing. I can see how people are saying the image is a bit soft. Image quality wise when shooting at standard ISO, I don't believe the MKIII is a superior image. I believe even with NR turned off, Canon is definitely doing something on-chip to reduce noise which in turn gives you a slightly softer image. Both camera's are still awesome at retaining detail though so that is a good thing. And with the NR + Sensor, the MKIII does have a slight ISO advantage based on my tests. The images from the MKIII do very well with post sharpening. I think overall images coming out of the MKIII will require slightly more work to get them to shine. Luckily, they have the latitude to support this. I'm happy with my purchase, but I do feel this camera is very evolutionary. I traded an MKII and a 7D + a bit of cash for it and with my testing I'm not 100% sure it was worth. Anyhow, hope this helps anyone. Looking forward to seeing more images from all of you. Some amazing photos on here. These were SOOC, Picture Profile Neutral, NR and Sharpening turned off, JPEG L, Auto White Balance. I've also linked them full-size images on my server for anyone to pixel-peep. Absolutely agree here. These 5D3 files are requiring a lot more work to get them up to standard.

First is with the 24-105mm, second with 50mm f/1.2. Image quality isn't any better than 5D Mark II, but the ability to shoot at ISO 12800 with good results, and to auto-focus in such dark, challenging conditions are huge improvements.
Looking forward to shooting with the new camera in more "normal" conditions. -- Chris --

Good catch - I hadn't even noticed that when I was looking through these. I went back and looked at the series of shots that I took in this sequence, and all have the vertical lines in that area. I suspect it's the combination of the image being severely underexposed, taken at such a high ISO (12800), and the colors themselves. I looked at other shot sequences where the lighting was better with shots that weren't as underexposed, and there were no vertical lines like these. So ISO 12800 is nice, but it does seem like it's subject to vertical banding in certain situations if your way underexposed. I would usually never shoot with such a high ISO, but the lighting in the bar was pretty awful, almost non-existent. -- Chris --

I wonder if it's something else. Body: Sony a7R IV
