I've been shooting my 24-105L with my 7D for years, on the 5DMKIII it is really like a whole new lens! I'm very happy! This is IMO in addition to the FF factor...

Nice. Sounds good. Thanks

I love the shallow depth of field I now get from F4 after coming from a 7D.

I'm a bit curious about how this works. Using DOF Master on my phone, if I use these settings: f/4.0, 105mm, say 10 feet or so away, it would appear that a crop camera would have a lower DOF than a full frame. Am I thinking about this incorrectly?

Yes. And no.

If everything is kept identical then full frame has a larger DOF because there is less enlargement of the image. Note that most DOF calculations are based on the assumption that you will print the image at 8x10 and view the image from a "normal" viewing distance.

The no part is because 105mm will give a wider field of view on a full frame camera which changes the composition. In order to have the same composition you would zoom the full frame camera to 165mm, and that change of focal length will give the full frame image a much more narrow DOF.

I've been putting the AF through it's paces today, I'm mightily impressed. This cam spanks it every time.

For the BIF shot, are you using 61-point automatic selection AF with one of the case 1 to 6?

Ventured out into the rain today to test the 5D 3 and its weather sealing:

Certainly wouldn't say there is anything here that I couldn't do with my 5D2 but shooting with the 5D3 is definitely nice. And any concerns with all the talk about "inferior IQ" is unfounded. I see no lack of clarity in the images that I was working with today with my standard workflow. I do like how responsive the outter focus points are -- but again the light was plenty good for even the 5D2's outter points to function okay. When the weather gets better I'll see if I can do some side by side comparisons of the ii and iii.

Nice pictures.

My Canon 85 1.8 lens just became a ton more useful now that it's on a full frame sensor. I forgot how beautiful this lens render images, it just moved up further in line as one of my favorite.

The 5D3 didn't recognize this lens though when enabling lens aberration correction, what's up with that?

So...do any of you 5D Mark III owners have any intentions of using UniWB with the camera? I'm struggling to get it working and would appreciate some help. I've started a thread about it here:

Has anyone noticed how nice the colors from this camera are? I don't know if it is the more accurate WB or what, but I am getting the nicest colors out of any canon body I have used. Including the Xsi, T1i, 7D, 5Dc and 5D2. I have noticed just how pleasing all my images look sooc or from RAW. Impressive sensor... Or Digic 5... Whatever is doing it! But it is not my imagination that is for sure.

Took the camera to Pittsburgh today and really tested the camera out... love these results... Not one missed focus, servo or one shot. Metering was accurate even in challanging light, very little messing with EC.

Sorry but I had to post one more, for having a split second to achieve focus here, I'd say it nailed it! I'm not sure my 7D or my 5D MK2 would have gotten this.

I wanted to get a true representation of how the camera performed in various standard conditions to check if the camera is actually working properly and how it stacks up to my gone but never forgotten MKII. As like some of you, I was pretty disappointed with the images from earlier in this thread. As many people seem to blog about discuss, I was too hyper concerned with the softness of some of the SOOC photos.

I took over 200 shots over the last day and here's a few that represent the range. These were shot with various ISO but at very high shutter speeds to ensure camera shake is reduced to an absolute minimum. They are also pretty run of the mill, but I was more concerned with finding various lighting conditions and textures to test.

What do you guys think? Does this look like acceptable sharpness? I'm focusing on sharpness as that is something you can't really fix much in post. Color rendition is easy. After comparing photos and reading back my notes, I've come to the tentative conclusion that the older MKII produces slightly sharper photos out of the camera. It requires less post-processing. I can see how people are saying the image is a bit soft. Image quality wise when shooting at standard ISO, I don't believe the MKIII is a superior image. I believe even with NR turned off, Canon is definitely doing something on-chip to reduce noise which in turn gives you a slightly softer image. Both camera's are still awesome at retaining detail though so that is a good thing. And with the NR + Sensor, the MKIII does have a slight ISO advantage based on my tests.

The images from the MKIII do very well with post sharpening. I think overall images coming out of the MKIII will require slightly more work to get them to shine. Luckily, they have the latitude to support this. I'm happy with my purchase, but I do feel this camera is very evolutionary. I traded an MKII and a 7D + a bit of cash for it and with my testing I'm not 100% sure it was worth. Anyhow, hope this helps anyone. Looking forward to seeing more images from all of you. Some amazing photos on here.

These were SOOC, Picture Profile Neutral, NR and Sharpening turned off, JPEG L, Auto White Balance. I've also linked them full-size images on my server for anyone to pixel-peep.

I'm not really sure how much sharper you want it to be. It looks good to me. Considering that no sharpening has been done to them, I think they look great.

well I had ONE OOF shot today..... 10 second delay for a group shot, I hadn't moved AF to the rear button only, so when I stabbed the shutter to begin the shot it AFed on accident w/o me knowing what/where it was aimed. otherwise, so far I'm loving it. I didn't realize it was 10% heavier than the 5D2 though, that was a shock.

Quite a few comments through here I've noticed claiming the same, which is great, but I always feel left out in discussions on colour and colour representations - I'm not colour blind, but I am pretty blind to colour if that makes sense. I see pictures in composition and light then texture with colour way down the list... then again I can't tell the difference between diet and non-diet cola either;)

It does have pretty good color. It's just a real nice shooting camera. I'm really tempting the notion of getting 2 of them!
