At such high ISO, the noise looks grain-like and is very usable

I'll print a few pictures tomorrow to see how they look at ISO 12,800 and 25,600.

Cute pictures Stu! Did you get your 5D Mark III locally?

Thanks, Julius! I'm renting it from Hawaii Camera.

Any one registered (product registration) their 5D Mark III on Canon website yet? I did it last night and my 5D Mark III showed up as 5D Mark II. Has anyone noticed this?

Can anyone tell me if the mkIII will focus at f8, with or without taping pins??

Neil found this over at naturescapes: 5DM3 works at f/8...sort of... (external link)

Somewhere I could have swore I read that Canon was working on a firmware update for the new 1Dx that is going to allow the AF to function at f/8. So maybe the 5D Mark III also ... :-|

Nice! It's a great place to rent out some gear before purchasing and great staff too! Hope you like the camera though, as I love mines :) Nice to hear from people from Hawaii!

Using logical reasoning I determined that I don't need to upgrade to this camera.
And then I went out and ordered one.
:)

I've had mine for 2 days. First thoughts are; high ISO on still lifes look great, real world not quite as good, AF the 61 point and selection option are great however the outer set is not cross type points and function very poorly in low light on low contrast subjects, if you move one row in those points nail focus quickly in low light, metering seems much better, auto WB is still pretty poor.

I'm bumbed that Lightroom 4 does not support the MK 3 and even with the DNG conversion you are left with limited editing.

Although I like the dual card slots I don't like the new grip (much thicker)
That's all I have so far.

Not experienced any af issues with the outer points in low light. Not sure how editing is limiting with dng. I can do any and everything I can with cr2 raws from my other bodies.

For the iso, I went in and assigned the SET button on the job wheel to allow me to re-assign the iso on the fly when taking photo's. So I can press the set and then turn the top scroll wheel to re-assign the iso. So I have full control in manual of the shutter, aperture, and iso. This is a big improvement for me over the 50D that I had.

Could you not jut press the top ISO button and use the rear scroll wheel like on the Mk2?

Yes that still works too. Just another customization so folks can set it up like they want.

Yeah...I'm not too surprised:) You shoot weddings, right? You have an excellent rationalization. It's a legitimate business expense.

Just wondered if he already knew it was setup out of the box to do this although in a slightly different way.
Great that you can customise more buttons the mk3 though.

check out that pic from the 5d3. the 5d3 looks sharper, but maybe thats due to DOF issues? or i wonder if it was SOOC jpg... hmmm...

This camera may very well convert a lot of people to Jpeg shooters. So far everything I've seen not shot at point blank produces a very nice image.

It's almost like looking at a magazine cover. Very nice shots.
