I want to upgrade my dslr as Ive been using the canon rebel xs for the past few years. So far the camera in the lead is the t2i. Apparently it has the same image quality as the t3i, so I am thinking the t2i will be fine. Will I notice a big upgrade? Will it be big enough?

I cant afford too much, but I guess I would entertain the 60d if it made sense. Should I look at any other camera bodies or does my plan sound good for a first upgrade?

Thanks :)

I have a T2i, it was my 1st DSLR so I can't say how big of an upgrade it would be for you. I have been very happy with it. Reconsider the T3i. The flip out screen could be useful for composing low or high angle shots vs. the T2i. Otherwise I believe they are very similar.

I went from an XS to a T2i and never looked back.
The difference is like day and night.
Though, as autoidiodyssey said, consider the T3i or 60D too.

If you like the form factor of your XS and how it handles consider a T2i or T3i.
If you're looking to save a little extra, get a T2i (CLP for even more $$) and put that saved cash towards another lens (50mm 1.8) but, if the articulating screen tugs on your heartstrings, go for the T3i.

And if you're gravitating more to the T3i, I would just go ahead and get a 60D.
The way it feels in your hands is good, it has an articulating screen, same sensor as its little brothers (T2i and T3i, as well as cousin 7D) and has a higher FPS.

I have a T2i and a 60d. The only reason I would take a T2i over a T3i would be to save a little bit of money IF I had to, but I just find the swivel screen too handy. CLP will save you some nice money, but consider if you can get a 60d for $640 through CLP, it may be too nice a price to pass on.

My "old" XTi has given me some excellent quality images over the years, but I'm really enjoying the addition of a 60D. Of course, there's a noticeable improvement in IQ, but the biggest plus has been usability and the way it handles. Finding the size and weight has been just right for me. The control dial on the back plus easy access to settings like the ISO, focus points, etc. with the camera at eye level have become a necessity. Those are the primary reasons I skipped over the T2i and T3i (which are obviously comparable in IQ and excellent in their own right) in the decision process. Also went with a refurb from Canon during their sale last December which made the price not a whole lot more than a T3i.

To Mike: The reason I want to upgrade is because I want to be able to produce better image quality, have the potential to crop better and blow up some shots of mine. I would also like to have the HD video capability. Not the main reason for upgrading, but its a nice plus. Currently, I have kit lens 18-55, 55-250, 50mm 1.8, and tokina 11-16.

I started with the XS two years back, moved to the T2i after about 6 months. It's a great camera, a big leap from the XS and gets you into that zone of expanded creativity. I still use it quite often.

....the best camera is the one you have on you at the time.

that XS was my first DSLR, got it as a gift (in 2010) from my GF, and then the list started.

ok. i upgraded from a XS for the ISO limitation it had. and so you know, you aren't going to see drastic improvements in IQ. the XS is a very good camera.

in order to know what you want to upgrade to you need to know what you want in features.

a t2i, t3i, 60D and 7D all have the same images sensor and will have the same exact IQ. the only difference is body styles and features.

if you like the size of the rebels don't really need the more advanced AF systems, then a t2i will be your best bet.

if you want a more prostyle layout, better AF better battery, etc go with a 60D.

if IQ is your main concern, don't forget about upgrading your glass too. im not sure what you budget is but you could probably sell your XS with kit lens, get a t2i with a tamron 17-50/2.8 for the same price that you could get a 60D and the 18-135mm.

the t2i and the 17-50 would give you much, much better IQ than a 60D and the 18-135, becuase the 17-50 is a much better lens than the 18-135.

it all depends on what your needs and wants are.

Good suggestions , thanks

My current lens lineup: Tokina 11-16mm, 50mm 1.8, canon kit lens 18-55, and 55-250.

I like the idea of selling the kit lens with the rebel xs and getting a t2i with a tamron. I imagine the 18-135 is comparable IQ wise to the 18-55 and 55-250?

No. The 18-55 IS + 55-250 IS are better than 18-135.

I'd agree wit that. The 18-135 is build better( it has metal mounts) but IQ wise its inferior. I had one and hated it. Since you already have a 11-16 covering you wide end, I'd suggest going with a tamron 24-75/2.8 instead of the 17-50. But both are great lenses and price is comparable. it depends on what range you want.

Also don't discount the 60d. I'd suggest going and holding each. The pro style layout is nice. You don't fiddle inside the menus, all the buttons you need areout in the open.

spend the money and get a 60d IF you shoot moving things often.
The AF is much better on it.
I went from a t1i to the 60d. its much nicer.
also the battery in the 60d lasts 2x longer than the Rebel series battery.
