Will this tripod be ok for my new (used) 300 2.8 is?

Depends on what you're shooting to some extent. I've used my longer lenses on my 55 / 498 setup. After awhile I found it frustrating to be able to quickly adjust / recompose.

Invested in the Manfrotto 393 gimbal. Being able to balance at the center of gravity makes a huge difference.

....the best camera is the one you have on you at the time.
