I know you can focus on things right on the lens but what I am wondering is how well does the camera focus on things about 1-2 feet away but zoomed in close for detail, such as a car radio so I can get details of the buttons but be far enough back that my reflection isn't showing in the screen.

If you add the Canon 500D 72mm closeup lens (with a step up ring 67mm- 72mm) you can zoom the lens out to 840mm and you will be able to look at the texture of the paper when you print this reply out. The amount of detailed enlargement is like forensic detail.

I don't think canon made the 500D in 67mm. They did/ do make the 500 close up lens up to 62mm.

Without the 500D you don't get anywhere near that amount of magnification.
This combo also beats the typical closeup lens combos (kits= +10, +4, +2, +1) as you don't have to literally be right on top of the target. You can stand back about 12 - 15" in most cases…so light on the target is not as much of an issue as well.

Lotsa stuff, running outta room and a wife...I keep looking at her and wondering???

Oh yeah forgot to mention you need to attach (bayonet style attachment) a filter adapter.
I don't use the Canon filter adapter or hood as I believe they are mutually exclusive when mounted (they don't play well together) I got mine on Amazon. I think Vivitar makes the filter holder and I use a three position rubber hood mounted on the filter adapter (standard 67mm threads. Then the Canon 500D closeup filter mounts to the threads on the hood.
