Just got a 2nd 430 EX II and want to work more with off-camera flash, nothing pro, mostly just pics of my kids, so looking for something inexpensive that will give OK results.

I already have a stofen omni-bounce for one of my 430s, would I just bet better off getting one more of those?

you'd be better off having a white bedsheet a few feet in front of your flash and using it as a big softbox, and that's probably free :-)

bigger = softer.

I use one of this type diffuser in shooting macros. Mine is made by Lumiquest and I believe that the others are Chinese copies of that rig.

It works quite well because at that distance it is quite a large light source.

However for all other shooting, I will bounce using a Joe Demb Flash Diffuser Pro on my full size hotshoe flashes (550EX, 430EX and 420EX) and will use the Joe Demb Photojournalist FlipIt on my little 270EX.

The FlipIt and the FlipIt portion of the two-part Flash Diffucer Pro is adjustable and can be used at a 45 degree angle forward when shooting outdoors or in venues in which the ceiling is too dark or two high off which to effectively bounce.

I really like the Flash Diffuser Pro. I have no financial connection with Joe Demb but, his website links to my portrait gallery shot with a 550EX flash on a Stroboframe Camera Flip Bracket, modified with the Flash Diffuser Pro.

I also have a Stofen and since I got the Demb units, I use the Stofen as a container for my AA flash batteries...

Like RPCrowe, I use the Demb FDP and , for on-camera flash, it does a great job.
Google "a better bounce card" for a low -to no cost alternative.

Regards,
Eric

I took 2 pieces of fun foam from the local hobby shop and made this. it's black on one side, and white on the other. velcro at the bottom to attach to my flash, and when attached, it's slightly curved.

I think it cost me a whopping $4 altogether.

I have it and I use it often. However, I do not use it as a "soft box" for portrait work.

The concept of soft box is that the bigger the box, the softer the light. The closer the box is to the subject, the softer the light

This mini soft box makes the surface area of the speelight "bigger" tp 48 sq.in but that is not much if your model is 3 -4 feet away. It will still be like a "point" source. if you are taking pictures of subjects that are closer, you will get a slighltly softer feel.

I use it when i am using the flash as a fill light during daytime outdoor shoots, since I feel that there is a wee bit of softening compared to bare flash.

Theoreticall this other soft box should be "better" as the surface area is 288 sq in

but you'll be better off spening your money on a Fotodiox " BD with a sock with a Bowen's mount and this bracket to mount your speedlight along the axis

If you want a cheap solution, buy one stand and a shoot thru umbrella for off camera flash.

The mini softbox you posted will leave you underwhelmed.
