I am photographing a friend's car in two days with hopes of getting a feature (possibly even a cover) in an automotive magazine. Should I expect compensation from the mag? I've never done this before, so I'm not really sure what to expect. Thanks in advance!

-Michael

how big is the magazine? what's the circulation? how many pages will the feature be? Are you writing too or just shooting?

I've done a lot of similar work...

Just look and see what the magazine pays. There is usualy submittion information someplace. You may have to email them as it may not be on thier site. But it usually can be gotten quite easily.

Keep in mind that usually the "bigger" the magazine, the less they pay, because there is so many people that want to shoot for them. The whole "supply and demand" thing

Apparently, it's an international magazine, but it's based in Atlanta. Issues are released quarterly (every 3 months). Not sure about the length of the article, but I'm definitely not writing anything. :P The mag has seen my previous work and seems very interested in me providing this feature for them.

are you dealing with a guy who has the initials JW ?

if so, I'm quite familiar with that magazine. They are notorious for not paying very well. In fact, they owe me for a feature I sent them last month.... brb sending an invoice

Magazines rarely license or pay for pics already shot, unless the subjects are celebritites. Any feature article, especially with a cover shot involved, is crefully crafted and will always be directly commissioned with a subject and photographer. You loose all leverage when the work is already done. They know the car owner will pay you to feature their car so they do not have too. They get hundreds of submissions every month-how is yours really different??????

Then they do pay. I'm just wondering how much I should charge or if they have a set amount they pay photographers.

You're incorrect. I've sold archived work a lot, especially to automotive magazines.

Ask them to make you an offer. I expect the price to be in the low low 3 figure range

These things should be discussed at the time they contact you. If you were approached by your friend, I would have a written agreement in place. The magazines rates are based on their Ad Space rate. Here in Atlanta, I find that Editorial rates start at $250 per image for 1/4 page and $2800+ for covers. Are you seriously thinking of providing free content? My experience is that free work only leads to more free work. If the magazine does not pay for images you are simply putting more money in their pockets.
