Lately I've taken to using the 'verify' option after I burn a DVD in my new PC. 90% of disks have a verification error, some have two or three, but most of the time they work fine anyway.

I use Taiyo Yuden disks, the best in the world. I've never had a customer complaint about a disk failing.

Should a DVD writer be able to burn and verify a disk with no errors? It's an LG, and it's within warranty so would be replaced free.

I rarely have a disk fail to verify against the original if it actually completes the write. It's possible you've got a bad batch of media (I've got a spindle of DVD-R disks at work that fail to complete the burning process about 70% of the time) or that you've got a bad drive. The good news is that both are cheap to replace.

I never used to verify much with my old PC, but I've never seen an error like this before. Might get it replaced.

Sorry to hear about the aggravation Tim - I use TY also, likely from recommendations here, and have had no issues. It sounds like your LG is fairly new so I'm pulling this one out of my hat.......is it possible a hunk of dust or crud got on the "burn" lens or whatever that thing is? I admit that's a longshot since the drive "should" still be fairly clean.

By any chance do you have a second drive in your case that you can experiment with and troubleshoot by elimination?

I only have one optical drive. I'll just return it and get another one.

Bump - I'm getting ready to purchase a new supply of my Taiyo Yuden disks. I see they are now in some sort of joint venture with JVC.

Any idea if there's a quality difference or spec change here? I also see they offer a "water shield" version of their disk that has a white glossy surface instead of the usual flat matt white. You have any experience with this Tim? They also seem to be pricier than the matt white.

In NZ I take what I can get. I'm sure either will be fine, and probably best google re water shield or not. I know some pros do like them.

I bought a case of the water-shield CD-Rs about a year ago. My car refuses to play them. They are noticeably thicker so that, or maybe the weight, probably has something to do with it.

In my experience it's not just the media you use that makes the difference, but the combination of writer + media. It sounds like your new drive does not play nice with the TY media. Write speed can also make a difference.
