Was going to download it, but after reading the reviews, I decided to pass. Biggest reason was that someone reported that it's about the same as Canon's Photo Stitch, which I already have.

True- but for free, I thought I would draw my own conclusions.

I don't get the Have to Download and Install it within the 24 hour giveway period.
If you're going to give away the program with a license key, why the install time limit.

Easy... it's a Win-Win. First off not that many people will hear about it in time so the actual number of freebies won't break the bank... also, there are only so many bits that can pass through your DL servers NIC's in a 24 hour period so you can closely estimate the maximum number of apps that could potentially be downloaded in 24 hours. You then compare that cost with how much you'd have to spend on advertising to get that same "bang for your buck" in publicity a freebie gets you.

Secondly... If they do get the free copy of your app and like it you get a new customer you probably wouldn't have earned otherwise. Then you release an upgrade shortly after your freebie and you get some cash out of some of them who now like your app and so they buy the upgrade. - Win

If they don't get it in time they will at least hear the name, probably checkout the app to see what they missed, and maybe they'll buy it, or at least keep it on their radar. Once again access to a potential customer who came looking for you so they're more motivated to buy then someone you attracted by sending them some spam emails about your products which they'll likely delete without even reading, just because it's spam. - Win

Of course this is just off the top of my head and I could be wrong... :D
