I understand the need to bounce an on camera flash but what tips can I use for shooting in the vertical? I can swivel my flash to point upwards but it is then in the 'longside' position. What can I use to diffuse? Can I use a narrow white strip or fold the card around the flash?

Many thanks.

If you are bouncing off of the ceiling then having it bounce from the longside isnt that big a deal. Look at getting yourself something like the rogue flashbender that will allow you to mount it as a bounce card on either the long or short side to kick light forward while still bouncing. If truly want to keep the flash above the camera, look at a camera rotate flash bracket.

I was having the same problem. After reading the speedlighters handbook, I bought an ETTL cord and just just hold the flash in my left hand. It works surprisingly good and I no longer worry about shooting vertical.

It does take some time to get use to changing settings and handling the flash and camera.

There are flash bounce products like the Joe Demb Flip-it that mount on the narrow side of the flash to enable use in vertical orientation.

I have my flash head wrapped with velcro and attach my homemade bounce cards any way I want.

A flash bracket is an option, too. But honestly, I hardly ever use mine anymore. If I want a vertical shot, I just zoom out, shoot it horizontal and crop the side off later.
