I figured as much; I took a look at my copy and it reminded me why I tend to not recommend his books. The instructions in the section titled "Adding More Life to the Eyes" violate the physics of light, namely the Law of Reflection
which states that the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection.
The enhanced, lightened color of the iris (the "melon slice" portion you're trying to select) is caused by light entering the eye (mainly at the point of the catchlight), striking the retina, and reflecting out through the iris opposite the catchlight. When this occurs it is always directly OPPOSITE the catchlight. So in the examples from the book, you would expect to see the lightened area at about the 8 o'clock position but the instructions lighten the selected area uniformly when you would normally expect to see the lightest area directly opposite the catchlight.
