This is what i'm trying to do:

Edited out the images

Here is an image to one of my problems

1679
x
975
TOO LARGE!
EMBED PREVENTED, IMAGE TOO LARGE:

Click here to see our image rules.

And If I make a larger selection with the rectangular marquee tool, it will let me select it, but instead of a rectangular selection, it turns into an oval like selection.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

What happens if you reduce the Feather amount to a reasonable number like 3 or 4?

BTW, those instructions are way too complex for what they are trying to accomplish. You can much more easily draw a crescent shape just by using the Marquee tool or better yet, you can add the accent to the eye by drawing freehand.

That worked, thanks!!

Now that I'm finally learning PS, i'll probably have many more questions like this that are giving me roadblocks that someone like you can can easily figure out. :o

I'll add the other steps to the tutorial so you can see how much more there is.

What book is that? Looks like a Kelby book.

Learn how the ALT, Shift, and CTRL keys work with the tools and you'll find it them much easier to use.

The clue is in the warning message from Photoshop; because you had an extremely large Feather radius Photoshop couldn't make the selection you wanted.

Thanks for your help :)

I figured as much; I took a look at my copy and it reminded me why I tend to not recommend his books. The instructions in the section titled "Adding More Life to the Eyes" violate the physics of light, namely the Law of Reflection (external link) which states that the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection.

The enhanced, lightened color of the iris (the "melon slice" portion you're trying to select) is caused by light entering the eye (mainly at the point of the catchlight), striking the retina, and reflecting out through the iris opposite the catchlight. When this occurs it is always directly OPPOSITE the catchlight. So in the examples from the book, you would expect to see the lightened area at about the 8 o'clock position but the instructions lighten the selected area uniformly when you would normally expect to see the lightest area directly opposite the catchlight.

Here's an illustration:

I hate to rain on the parade, but I believe that posting Kelby's work violates forum rules, and that you should either post a link (if there is a tutorial online) or just describe what you are trying to do and post your shots that show the problem you are having. You did that, but in your OP you should delete the Kelby stuff before a mod comes on board and "spanks" you:)!
