Finally caught it in the daytime.

It's a rebuilt SD-40-2 painted in their 50's streamliner scheme. I've seen Kodachromes of their 50's E8's and that is exactly how they are painted.

That's a nice shot. Do you think you'll ever get to do a walk around of it?

Not sure really. Depending on what train it is on I may, this particular train stops for a southbound nearby and the engineer on it is a good friend of mine.

It rarely leads and when it does it's usually at night so catching it in the wild in the daytime has proven rather difficult.

Originally this was supposed to be the 2nd locomotive but the engineer convinced the yard to put it in front,

Thanks, one of my better train shots

Very nice. Heritage units seem to be the rage.

As it gets later into the Summer, "night" becomes "right!" ;)

That's about right, when summer nears I find myself further north in the Merritt Island Preserves shooting these things.

Why would they not put it in the lead? Mechanical advantages of other unit?

Beautiful shot, reminds me of Grapefruit for some reason. :)

This locomotive has a tag on it from the yard "do not lead" unless necessary. The railway is afraid gate runners and trespassers will damage the front in a collision, and there are no shortages of them here. Florida drivers are just plain crazy, I've seen some close calls while staking out crossings for the perfect shot.

The engineer in this train, the one with his hand out the window waving at me, had them place this at the front, originally the rear locomotive was going to lead. He's a good friend of mine and knows a lot of the railfans on the site and every once in a while, weather permitting of course, they put it on a daytime revenue train out front for the photographers. One of the great things about FEC is it's a small railroad and the CEO and many of the upper management welcome the railfan community (hey free advertising) and hold a few functions for us throughout the year.

It's been completely rebuilt, and rumor has it every locomotive that comes in the shop for a ground-up rebuild will get the same treatment. Would love to see them do one of the old "Hurricane" motors from the 80's and 90's, I remember seeing those as a child and there's still a few kicking around on the mainline.

Nice shot!

Don't waste your life trying to get your shots on that website :D. The photo screeners are not exactly "experts" in railroad photography. One screener's junk shot is another screener's art piece.

You're better off sticking to Flickr.

Yeah it's on my flickr and has positive reception over there.

I'm just glad my first time shooting the heritage unit I nailed the shot the first time (and only shot I took of it with the 5D)

This is the video you can see me juggling my Rebel + 70-210 f4 and Nikkormat FTN with 105/2.5, I shot one photo with each, have been making a point to do one subject one shot.
