This is revisiting older shot. At the time that I did the initial processing I stopped there and then kind of just let it be. The other day my wife asked me I was going to do anything with this photograph, specifically print it and hang it - because she liked it.

So I pulled up raw file, and reprocessed it again and this was the result:

What I really like about it is the bleakness of the forest. This actually is part of the Black Forest in Germany, so "bleak", "black","bleak", "black" - that's where I get the title.

I wanted to do some postprocessing that would really emphasize what I perceive to be the bleakness and desolation of the environment. My first thought was a straight monochrome, but for some reason it came out particularly uninteresting. Here I ended up going with a monochrome plus a tint. This is somewhere between sepia and palladium tone:

Still not satisfied, I decided to do a bleach effect. NOW this is more like it. Beginning to have a little bit of a post apocalyptic feel to it.

But the more I looked at it the more I wasn't sure I liked how washed out that version was. Which ended up bringing me to this, I think the strong yellow tone does emphasize the feel that I was going for.

Still not sure which one can I hang. In print they all look pretty much like they do here, so no anomalies there to worry about.

I know that most of the processing is a little bit over the top, and perhaps an acquired taste, but nonetheless, "What say you, one and all?"

Of your edits, I like the bleach version best. But it loses the character of the clouds altogether.

Here's my attempt:

IMAGE: http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn147/Phoenix51200/IMG_2531_1.jpg

I use Elements - it's sort of hard to explain what I did, because I experiment all sorts of ways, but I first multiplied to darken the image, especially the sky. Then I created a slightly blurred layer and screened it for an orton-type effect. It turned out too light so I multiplied again, then played with the levels. My colours ended up on more of a reddish, purplish edge than yellow, but you could change that. I eased the saturation back and enhanced the contrast in the lighter areas, then added a slight vignette. Rather dreary rainy-day effect - I'm not sure it's what you're looking for, but just a suggestion.

And here's another try. This one I aimed for a true Orton - started off by making a duplicate layer and darkening it a lot, then putting a Gaussian blur on the lighter layer and screening it over the darker one. Then, again, I played with the hue/saturation and levels to taste. It's a pretty easy edit and can be overdone, but to me it would work well on this scene.

It seems to me that all the trees are falling toward the road. So I did a b&w and straightened the trees.

#2 or #4 is what I'm drawn to. #4 isn't classic "bleach", but for art it works.

RadTech...I also vote for #2.

I like how the curved trees keep my attention framed and looking toward the umbrella and the vanishing point.

I like #2 but I like the red spot of the umbrella. #3 really did it for me, more so than #4.

Maybe you could put more emphasis on the red umbrella...kinda like this.

Or maybe you could add a little rain too.

Thanks everybody for all of the comments and editing work. There were a lot of really good ideas generated and I appreciate them all.

Qbx, you are right the trees do look like they're falling towards the road. This was one instance where I deliberately avoided adjusting that in post. As mentioned by cpam.pix I also thought that it helps the keep attention drawn to the walker, and additionally I think it makes the trees look a little bit more threatening or oppressive.

I would like to thank Navy Doc for his rain edit, which is a direction that I never would've thought to go, but I like the looks of and I think I will pursue it.

Rad
