Looking to pick up my first real ball head to use with a L plate. So it must accept Arca plate.

Looking at the Induro BHD2

Nikon D850 and a bunch of stuff, I have learned a lot here when I was shooting Canon, staying to keep learning..."Every time I set up I learn something new".

I just ordered a Sirui k-40x (external link). There doesn't seem to be a lot of information on these yet, but from what's out there it sounds pretty good. I figured I'd give it a shot, and if I don't like it I'll send it back.

Look at Photo Clam. They run around $200 depending in the size of the ballhead.

I have had the Sirui K40X for about a month - it's overkill! Still that's better than the alternative! It is a very nice head and it's quite at home with my 600F4 and 1 Series body. I don't think you or the OP would have any gripes about this head - except possibly for the weight!
Another one to have a look at is the Triopo RS3 - you will have to add on the cost of an Arca type clamp. In the UK this lot would cost about 55 pounds (about$75/$80 US). Don't be fooled by appearances this silly little 250 Gram head is something else. The lockup is superb, my 600 F4 + 1D4 set up way out of balance does not even test it. I dont have access to a 1200 F5.6 to try on it but I suspect it MIGHT cope as it only needs a moderately light twist of the lever to lock the 600 at any available angle.

Have a look at the smaller (K20x & K30x) Sirui heads - they should do a very good job for you.

Life is for living, cameras are to capture it (one day I will learn how!).
