Tethered Shooting using Lightroom

Was not sure where to post this.
I was trying to shoot tethered using Lightroom for the first time yesterday. The Lightroom part I figured out OK. The problem was that every time I attach the USB cable from camera to computer the shutter button locks up and the camera reads busy in the viewfinder. Making it impossible to take a pic. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a Canon Rebel T2i.

Thanks
Karen

That"s how tethered shooting works. The computer and software take control of the camera. You take pictures using Lightroom. The camera's controls are inoperable.

And if what you want instead is direct dump to a computer without the card, Canon makes a WiFi adapter for some cameras, or an EyeFi (kinda slow).

Actually, I just tried with my 5d Mark II and I can shoot from the camera. I thought for sure I remembered getting the busy indicator also.

I just tried it with my 40d. The result was the same as the 5d. The camera's controls coninued to work. I am using Canon's EOS Utility rather than Lightroom. I don't why there would be a difference.

Thanks for responding. Even when I used the shutter button in the Lightroom program it did not work.

Thanks for responding. I will look into that.

Thanks for responding. I know the lower versions of LR3 you had to add the EOS utility for it to work. I did not add them to my new laptop.

My 60D does that sometimes, and the XTi is real bad about it. I can't always replicate it. My best advice: turn off the camera with the power switch, plug in the USB cable to the computer and the camera, then turn on the camera, then start the tethered capture in Lightroom.

If you leave it for too long and the camera gos into sleep mode, it gets wonky again - if you press the camera's shutter button, the pictures won't always show up in Lightroom. But if you press the Lightroom shutter button, they will. Again, I can't always replicate this, so I haven't quite figured it out.

I find LR to be very SLOOOOOW and clunky. Use EOS Utility instead. It is fast and most of all IT WORKS!

I've noticed when shooting tethered with LR3 and the 5D Mark II you get the "busy" message when you've plugged in the camera through USB and you haven't loaded the tethering menu yet. Once you load the menu and controls, then the busy message goes away and at least with the 5D2, you can shoot from either the camera or the computer.

I shoot tethered with Lightroom using my 5Di. All camera controls work. All I want lightroom to do is display my images on a larger screen connected to my laptop. The great part about doing this is that Lightroom's interface remains on my laptop screen while the images I'm snapping show up on the external monitor. It's a pretty nifty option that clients love. The problem (which Yogi Bear mentioned) is that it really is slow and clunky compared to Canon's software. I'm hoping Lightroom 4 fixes this.

If you have a android phone or tablet you can use it to shoot tethered (depending on the model and OS version). I don't know if Apple has a similar app, but I've tried the android version and it seems to work great (though I have yet to thoroughly test it). If you are interested, here is the link to the app:

It never looks the same on the wall as it does in the paint can

i have an android phone, but i wouldn't want to tether it to that. I don't really want to buy an android tablet either. I was hoping on getting the new iPad and tethering it to that or waiting for the new air to be announced.

Thanks for the info though Marc appreciate it!
