I recently purchased a 300mm f2.8 and notice that it has two places on the lens to hook up a carrying strap. I currently am using Black Rapid straps to carry my camera with. The question I have, is it safe enough to hook up to the tripod mount on the 300mm or should I find a different type of strap hook directly onto the lens itself?

I used an old grey Canon camera strap on a 400 F2.8 (6.1 Kilo original EOS model) - worked fine for me. Anything that is secure and reasonably comfortable should do, especially on a relatively light lens. If you are not using the 300 as a "Walkabout" lens then I wouldn't bother with a strap unless you are doing an awful lot of walking as they just get in the way, if you are then get something cheap and comfy.

The problem with attaching a strap to the lugs on the lens is that the strap needs to be very long. Here's a pic showing a few straps. From Top to botton - BlackRapid, Canon strap supplied with lens, Optech extra long strap, Canon's standard strap.

I use the strap supplied with the lens, although I am considering dropping it and using the BR - attached to an Arca-Swiss clamp -

Frank,
I believe I saw (in another forum) where you listed the measurements of the Canon stock strap? My 300 2.8 came without one and I'd like to replicate it, perhaps with an Optech and extensions. Can you tell me the original dimension? Also, are the Optech extension connectors trustworthy? I'm scared I may bump one and dislodge the connection.

So you would use the black rapid for carrying, then disconnect to mount on tripod or monopod?

My thought is to get something long enough to keep around my neck while carrying the lens mounted to the tripod/monopod over my shoulder as a belts and suspenders kind of thing.

Thanks for the help, all good info here and it sure beats buying at random when others have already gone thru the vetting process!
