Has anyone been to Yosemite in the last few week? I'm heading to Monterey for a few days in early April and would like to get to Yosemite if the weather is cooperating. I'd rather not pack tire chains in my luggage...

I'd suggest you check the National Park website for local road conditions. Things change pretty quickly although they are good about plowing the roads in the valley.

all roads in are pretty much open but if we have another cold rain, it will snow in the higher elevations and you'll probably need chains. there's no way to tell until a couple of days before you're going. more than likely, you'll be ok because it's getting warmer right now instead of colder. if you have more questions closer to your trip, post again and we can update you.

How has the snow been this year? Here at RMNP there's been almost no need for snowshoes below 12,000 feet this winter.

The way it's been in the last few weeks will not help you predict the way it will be when you're there.

Road conditions can change in minutes. Watch a forecast to see whether it will be precipitating when you plan to go, and to see if there is rain or snow expected.

Last weekend saw about a foot of snow on the Valley floor. Overall, though, it has been a very dry winter here in CA. I live a ways north of Yosemite, at about 3000 feet. We got 16 inches of rain between March 13-19. It changed to snow on Saturday, and we got about 6 inches. A few hours later, the roads were clear. Tahoe ski resorts got between 30-40 inches of snow on Friday alone. Saturday morning was clear, the roads were all open with no restrictions, and it was 17 at 9:00 when I took the chairlift for the first run.

All the best. You can't know what the conditions will be like in Yosemite unless you're there.

I took a vacation in April thinking I'd be safe and big snows hit. I'd be safe and have chains available. In my case I had a rental car, and all shops renting chains were sold out, but for just a bit more I purchased some from a local hardware store.

Guy at the rental shop was a prick anyways so I was happy to bring business elsewhere and pay a bit more. Chains are still sitting in my garage 15 years later.

As of today it's clear and nice. It will most likely rain/snow this weekend though.
