Flying to Vegas to spend a week in Utah and need to know if TSA is going to steal my monopod. It may fit in my carry on or at least thru the handle.

Mar 22, 2012 21:30 | #2 I don't believe they will let you carry on a monopod - can be used as a weapon. Just like they wouldn't let you take a baseball bat with you. 7D Mark II, 50D, 17-55 2.8 IS, 100-400L IS, 10-22, Sigma 150-600 C, Sigma 150 2.8 Macro, EF-S 60MM f2.8 Macro, EF-S 18-55 IS, 28-135 IS, EF-S 55-250 IS STM, 580 EX II, Yongnuo YN-24EX, JasonC007 Diffuser Kit, Gitzo GT2531EX, ARCA-SWISS Z1, RRS B2 AS II clamp, Kirk L-bracket for 7DII, Kirk L-bracket for 50D

Just like they wouldn't let you take a baseball bat with you. We are trying to get by without checking luggage. Funny thing about the weapon statement because there is one behind every seat. Got any idea how much damage you can do with a tightly rolled up magazine used as a thrusting weapon. Mar 23, 2012 08:10 | #7 I certainly agree about the potential of a magazine as a weapon. A tripod, while heavier, is probably not as readily used as a weapon in a confined area. 7D Mark II, 50D, 17-55 2.8 IS, 100-400L IS, 10-22, Sigma 150-600 C, Sigma 150 2.8 Macro, EF-S 60MM f2.8 Macro, EF-S 18-55 IS, 28-135 IS, EF-S 55-250 IS STM, 580 EX II, Yongnuo YN-24EX, JasonC007 Diffuser Kit, Gitzo GT2531EX, ARCA-SWISS Z1, RRS B2 AS II clamp, Kirk L-bracket for 7DII, Kirk L-bracket for 50D

tvphotog Cream of the Crop More info | Mar 23, 2012 12:38 | #11 I would check it. It doesn't take up room or weigh that much. The TSA may be lenient if you carry it on, but European security is more scrupulous as I've seen it. They often consider it a blunt weapon; I had to check a tripod a couple years ago out of Italy for that reason; I always pack those things now. Jay

The TSA has never commented on it when going through security. That works until you get an OCD agent. Jay

A sufficiently concerned security agent, ground crew or flight crew member can rule against anything they have reason to believe poses a hazard (not necessarily a "terrorism security" hazard, mind you) to a safe flight.
