Flying to Vegas to spend a week in Utah and need to know if TSA is going to steal my monopod. It may fit in my carry on or at least thru the handle.

I don't believe they will let you carry on a monopod - can be used as a weapon. Just like they wouldn't let you take a baseball bat with you.

We are trying to get by without checking luggage. Funny thing about the weapon statement because there is one behind every seat. Got any idea how much damage you can do with a tightly rolled up magazine used as a thrusting weapon.

should be fine. Take a printout of the tsa's policy showing them that it it photographic equipment. Ultimately though it is up to their discretion.

I certainly agree about the potential of a magazine as a weapon. A tripod, while heavier, is probably not as readily used as a weapon in a confined area.

I would suggest packing it in your checked baggage.

Magazine heck, image the damage you could do to one's skull with a 24-70 or a 1D series body.

I better shut up, TSA might suddenly decide all photo gear could be potential weapons.

I reckon it depends on what type of monopod , a Manfrotto 680b at 1.5kg's would be a lethal weapon while a Gitzo 2561T would be hardly noticed

I would check it. It doesn't take up room or weigh that much. The TSA may be lenient if you carry it on, but European security is more scrupulous as I've seen it. They often consider it a blunt weapon; I had to check a tripod a couple years ago out of Italy for that reason; I always pack those things now.

The TSA allows you to carry on monopods and tripods. According to their nifty iPhone app, "you may transport this item in carryon or checked baggage".

I often carry a tripod and/or monopod on the plane. The TSA has never commented on it when going through security.

That works until you get an OCD agent.

Always remember, anything you want to carry onto the plane that isn't expressly forbidden is "local option". A sufficiently concerned security agent, ground crew or flight crew member can rule against anything they have reason to believe poses a hazard (not necessarily a "terrorism security" hazard, mind you) to a safe flight.
