Canon Speedlite 580EX (not II)...PC Sync DIY implementation?

Does anyone know if it's possible to DIY mount on a 580EX a PC Sync socket,eg. to replace the 1/4" threaded hole near the external power pack connector, under the rubber lid?
I use this flash mostly off-camera w/a hotshoe 10ft. coiled cable but sometimes I'd trigger it via the PC Sync cable.
Any ideas?
TIA!

First of all, if you're going to modify your flash, install a 1/8" miniplug, not a PC socket.

Best bet is to buy a modified flash foot. Check this out:

That's right,it's not what I want to do.As a matter of fact, before posting here,I saw the flashzebra's product and while it looks professionally made,it just doesn't appeal to me for the simple reason that I want that the connector replace the useless 1/4" under the rubber lid and not another hole in the plastic.:(

Why?
Yep,I see now and then negative opinions about the reilability of the PC-sync connectors (not sure if most of the complaints address to the male or the female type).
But,AFAIK,aside of the better reilability of a 2,5/3,5mm male jacks,I've seen enough flimsy 2,5/3,5mm female receptacles.

Not for me,for the reasons above and also because I have advanced skills (I'm a tube amp repairman) so two wires to be soldered are,well...
What I was hoping for is to find a wiring legend of the original Canon's hotshoe,eg.to identify which are the two wires going to the PC sync/3,5mm/whatever 2-pole female connector.

The standard PC connection is notoriously unreliable and a royal pain in the rear end. The screwlock PC connector (which modern cameras and flash units have) is a great improvement in reliability but rather inconvenient. You have to line up the tiny threads on the tiny connector and make sure it's secure. It slows you down.

The 1/8" miniplug is far superior in reliability and ease of use. It has become the standard sync connection for studio monolights, so if your hotshoe flash has the same connector then you can use the same wires. It is ubiquitous enough that you can buy plugs and wires at local electronics stores.

I understand what you're trying to do. I've never been inside a 580EX so I don't know how practical the idea is.
