Got my 5DM3 yesterday (YEA!) .. but still waiting on my shipment containing my "proper" CF & SD Card for it ... due here Tuesday. So in reading the Manual, it is very specific about this, saying "The Camera Cannot Use Type II CF Cards or Hard Disk Cards" (p. 32).

However this SanDIsk Ultra II CF Card works just fine, at least for single images (which is all I wanted at this point anyway). I see the point of the "faster" card(s) for burts mode or Video -- which I am not attempting yet. I even FORMATTED it successfully using the camera to format it.

So my question is, can I damage anything shooting with this card inserted since it seems to work? I really don't want to wait for the other cards to arrive, but I will if there's possible danger in using this.

Thanks

You need a "propper" CF cards for a 5D3?
Wow. Didn't know that. Psh, I'm definitely keeping my 5D2's

So a "SanDisk Ultra II 4.0GB" CF card is a Type I ?? Go figure - I thought the "II" meant type 2 .. thanks

most CF cards are type I. Ultra "II" refers to the speed, not CF type.

Got it ... thanks ... So I guess the answer is that since it "fits", I can use it for now.. But don't expect Video or high-burst shots to work .. which is fine for now ...

Quoth the Wiki:

Type I and Type II

The only physical difference between the two types is that Type I devices are 3.3 mm thick while Type II devices are 5 mm thick. Electrically, the two interfaces are the same except that Type I devices are permitted to draw up to 70 mA supply current from the interface, while type II devices may draw up to 500 mA.

The vast majority of all Type II devices are Microdrives and other miniature hard drives. Flash based Type II devices are rare but a few examples do exist. Compact Flash — Secure Digital adapters usually are Type II. Even the largest capacity cards commonly available are Type I cards. Most card readers will read both formats, with the exception of some devices where the slot is too small. Various manufacturers of 4 GB Compact Flash cards such as Sandisk, Toshiba, Alcotek and Hynix have developed devices that support mainly type I slots. Some of the latest DSLRs, like the Nikon D700, have also dropped Type II support.

Type II CF cards joined the Dodo Bird when high capacity flash memory became reality. They only existed when a spinning media was the only way to offer a high capacity card.

The physical space demand of the spinning media is why a type II card is thicker than a type I, and the type II doesn't fit in a 5D Mark III because they need the space for the SD slot, and because nobody will care.

But don't expect Video ... to work ..

Video should work fine. Minimum required CF card speed for the Mark III is 10 MB/s and the II's are 15 MB/s. No hiccups with a 7D (8 MB/s required).

The only good thing about having a current camera body accept Type II cards is that it would allow use of an SD to CF II adapter and Eye-Fi card. Fortunately the 5D MKIII and D800 eliminate this need by having both CF and SD slots.

I don't think many people got the Eye-Fi to work properly with the adapters anyway ...
