I shoot real estate and use the 5d MK II with the TS-E 17mm and shoot in AV, ISO 100, 6 exposures from -4 to +4. My F stop is 22. Could I shoot at a lower F stop and still get clear pictures? I use photomatix to blend my pictures.

A wide lens like a 17mm generally has good DOF without stopping down that far.
You have the equipment. Try it and see what the results are. You are shooting digital. It is not like a few test shots are going to cost you anything. :)

Yes. I would recommend using a DoF as close to exactly what you need to keep the areas you need sharp, sharp.

I'm pretty sure the 17T&S has a useable DoF scale on the lens. Probably for most of what you shoot f/8 & f/11 will be good.

Heres a DoF calculator.
