Hi , I have just bought a 550D and would like to get a telephoto lens. My budget is limited and I am considering either the EF S 55-250 IS, or the 75-300 mm non stabilised. Is the stabilisation worth it? I have a good tripod. Any advice please. Thanks. D M.

Between those two lenses, its not stabilisation you need to concern yourself with. The 55-250 is better in every imaginable way. Get it.

I second the 55-250. I have played around with both, and the 55-250 is noticeably better. In fact, I would even dis-recommend the 75-300. Its lack of IS is disappointing when it comes to the telephoto end, and the lack of a dedicated focus ring...

I had the canon 75-300 5-6 years ago and returned it the same day and got canons 70-300. It was a huge improvement but have sold it.

55-250 IS will be my pick. Do look into the 70-200mm f/4 L non IS, it is just a little more money~!

Tamron 70-300 VC if you can add a tad more money. 55-250 if you can't.

The 75-300 is a very poor lens. Get the 55-250, I get some incredible shots with mine.

I strongly second this and google for possible rebates/coupons! I have the Tamron 70-300mm and it is just a phenomenal lens. My copy must have been extra special because the sharpness and saturation blow me away at times.

Otherwise, go with the 55-250mm. It's probably the best bang for the buck and better than the Canon 70-300 from what I've read. Don't bother with the 75-300mm.

Good luck.

55-250 is a terrific lens for the money. You won't be disappointed - get it.

It's a LOT more money but, well worth it if you can afford it.

If cash is short or you just don't want to spend that kind of money on a lens, the 55-250mm lens is a great bang for the buck!
