I'm a little confused about adding music to video's. Whats legal? I see wedding video's all the time with music. If I have music on iTunes that I bought, can I use any of the music I have? I will be charging for my service so I will be making money.

In short, unless you pay (buying it through iTunes doesn't count), you cannot legally use copyrighted music, especially when making money from it. You need the owners permission.

Creative Commons or Copyright free music, or making your own.

So your telling me all these wedding videographers pay money to use there music? For instance, we had a wedding video done and we picked the songs. I highly doubt it that our videographer paid for these. I want to shoot real estate video's and want to put some up beat music to them. There's so many people out there that attach music to video's. Are the odds of someone getting caught so astronomical that people don't worry about it?

Yes if they didn't pay for the right to use the song, or even get the owners permission, then they're breaking the law.

It's an old argument though and what it boils down to is some do and some don't.

There are several sites with royalty free music. Here are I couple that I use.http://vimeo.com/musicstore (external link)

http://www.jamendo.com/en/ (external link)

It's a good habit to start using royalty free music.

It's kind of like all of those people who use pirated images to create videos on youtube. Technically, it's not legal but it's still rampant. As an artist, I make it a point not to pirate content from other artists. You can find royalty free music available for use or simply buy a license for the songs you wish to use (which may not be as expensive as you think)......buying something on i-tunes does not give you a license to use it for anything other than personal use (meaning you can't use it to create a slideshow CD that you offer for sale).

There are many sources for Royalty Free music which (subject to any conditions the originator may apply) can be used without issue. You can buy complete albums on Amazon, and the like, which you can use to your hearts content.
