I guess I'm just saying that it's a bit unfair to write off the feature altogether as useless. It may work for some people's workflow and have other uses. Certainly in no way is it a "game changer" feature or anything. I'm still trying to figure out if it ultimately will prove to be part of a workflow in my work.

Ha--fair enough. I don't like deleting on camera -- just in case I accidentally delete something I don't want to. I'd rather rate something and undo it than delete something and not be able to undo it :)

Oh, you made me look at it in a new light! I might "rate" stuff I want to delete as a soft-delete option :), not a bad idea!

The main reservation I had about semi-thoughtful rating on camera is that it'll set me up with prejudice for my main rating session in front of the computer. In all other respects I agree having ability to tag pictures on-the-fly cannot be a bad thing.

You guys are all missing the point of the rate button. Obviously you can't use the rear LCD to judge sharpness, but images are supposed to be about content, right?

The rate button is perfect for flagging the images where you captured that big play or that perfect expression. Not images that you have deemed technically perfect based on the rear LCD, but for prioritizing the order of reviewing the technical quality when are sitting in front of a monitor. For sports guys where time is at a premium they can flag the big plays for the editor to review. It would be equally useful for wedding or portrait shooters so that when they get time to look at the images a day or two later.

Also don't forget that the 'stars' don't have to indicate quality. For example, a wedding photographer might have a system where any rating indicates a possible keeper and the number of stars indicates whether the shot was before the ceremony, during the ceremony, at the reception or a formal portrait.
