For those not familiar with the race, it is held at night time supposedly on NYC streets. For safety reasons, the organizer managed to use the Red Hook shipping dock area for the course. The roads are nice and well paved. So, the only thing urban about this race is the setting and the backdrop. However, it wasn't easy to convey this with photography since there are little ambient light. The course was lit up by 6 30ft tall spot lights powered by the generators. You bet, photographers, many, many of them "pros" and "GWC" attracted to this lights like moths to a light bulb. Using these spot lights to expose your shots you will only get the riders inside these lights. No ambient background lights and not much of them will get spilled to the rest of the riders behind or in the field. I didn't want to limit myself to your usual second curtain sync flash/light trailing shots. I decided to go against going off camera flash since I don't believe the field would wait for my flash to be cycled. Sadly, I saw too many photogs using off camera flash.

Dan Chabanov won the race 3 times in a row so far.

Thanks. My first time shooting the race and didn't know what to expect. However, I am hoping to see more shots from the race from other photogs. So far, I seem to have hard times finding any. Maybe 2 to 3 sources. There were A LOT of photogs there.

Very cool. Nice use of flash without looking like there was a nuclear explosion on the horizon. :D

I see another GoPro!

You are damn right about the nuclear explosion...LOL. :) Ironically, I really enjoy processing these shots. For the first time I feel like I didn't really need to nail the color or the exposures correctly. Just need to get that urban feel...

2 more. David Trimble, race organizer, preparing for the podium award. As you can see, there isn't much room for me.

The photog on the left? He was shooting with a Mamiya RZ67 with a power grip. I really didn't understand why he has a Quantum battery pack around his neck shooting with a RZ67....

More ambient feel..... :)

Dan has been soloing since lap 5 or so. I say about 1 minute gap. This is with less than 4 laps to go.

There is the Kissena outdoor velodrome in Queens. Is not that far. It is called the Red Hook Crit and I doubt that the organizer would change the venue location.
