Mar 25, 2012 21:16 | #2 If it's exclusively for sports and that requires high shutterspeed, then the IS isn't much help. Without extender, they are both very sharp. If you want to shoot 400 a lot, then you should get that and use the 1.4x only when you need the extra reach. If you might ever use the lens for other things, then the 300 is great with IS and has a wonderful MFD - it's useful as a close-focus (not 1:1) but getting towards macro. Whichever FL you think you'll use the most is the one you should get.
